Top cop’s dramatic threat to AXE New Year’s Eve fireworks as train chaos looms
Sydney’s iconic fireworks display is in jeopardy as rail strikes pose safety concerns for the thousands of revelers using public transport on New Year’s Eve.
Police Commissioner Karen Webb said she cannot rule out canceling the fireworks if 250,000 people who rely on public transport cannot get home safely.
“I’m very concerned,” she told reporters in Sydney on Friday.
‘Every year we control New Year’s Eve on the basis that 250,000 people can enter the city and then leave the city safely.
‘Leaving the city is based on access to transport, including trains.
‘And if there are no trains available and people cannot leave the city, I am very concerned about the risk posed to the public as families cannot get home and become stuck in the city with no way out.
‘I do not rule out recommending the government to cancel the fireworks. It’s that serious.’
The major update comes after the Federal Court rejected the NSW government’s technical argument to invalidate the industrial action on Thursday afternoon.
There’s more to come.
