  • Founded in 1941 to supply vehicles to the US military, Jeep is known for its rugged, gas-guzzling off-road vehicles.

But that’s changing, or at least the last bit, as the automaker announces its first all-electric car for the U.S. market.

It is not cheap. The Wagoneer S starts at $72,000 for the “launch edition,” with cheaper and more expensive models coming in the future.

The Wagoneer S has two electric motors that produce 600 hp and goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. It can travel more than 300 kilometers on a single battery charge.

While Jeep has already introduced the compact Avenger EV in Europe, the Wagneer S marks its entry into the US and Canada.

Although off-road capability is in Jeep’s DNA, it was not present at launch.

But Stellantis, Jeep’s owners, did unveil a concept called the Wagoneer S Trailhawk, with large off-road wheels and a raised suspension.

Since there is no need to cool an internal combustion engine, the signature Jeep seven-slot grille lights up at night to illuminate the areas around the SUV.

The Wagneer S – which features a sleeker, more aerodynamic design than previous gas versions – is designed to gauge consumer interest in an all-electric Jeep model.

Stellantis – which also owns Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat and European brands Citroen and Peugeot – is keen to roll out electric cars, in addition to petrol and hybrid models.

Jeep’s new model comes amid waning interest and enthusiasm for electric cars, even as President Joe Biden pushes to ban gasoline cars.

“The launch of the all-electric Jeep Wagoneer S marks a new chapter in the storied history of the Jeep brand,” said Antonio Filosa, CEO of the Jeep brand.

“Building on nearly a century of innovation and design, this first global EV will introduce a whole new generation of owners to an experience that is distinctly Jeep and 100% electric in every way.”

In response to environmental concerns, the Wagneneer S ditches wood, leather and chrome. It is the first Jeep that does not use Chrome. Synthetic materials that feel like leather will be used for the interior.
