Just weeks before her daughter was murdered by her then fiancé, Charlise Mutten’s mother wrote a ‘farewell cruel world note’ in which she apparently took her own life.

The note, which was released along with a lot of evidence after Justin Stein’s conviction for Charlise’s murder, indicated problems in the relationship between Kallista Mutten and Justin Stein.

Mrs Mutten, who had lived with Stein at his family’s Wildenstein estate at Mount Wilson in the NSW Blue Mountains, wrote notes for him in a special purple book.

In a post around Christmas 2021, after arguments with Stein that stemmed from his mother’s criticism of her, Ms Mutten – who was pregnant at the time – wrote about ending her life, which she did not do.

The message read, “Justin, I’m in pain and I’m sorry I left because I was mad because you were mad because I was taking things out of the bag and I was just ashamed of your mother.

‘I’m going to do everyone a favor and leave this cruel world. I’m sorry I wasn’t strong enough for you.

‘Please keep Charlise in your life. Tell her I’m sorry for being a bad mother and not being there for her.

“I’m sorry I brought you down. It’s too much to bear.

The note reflected Kallista Mutten's depression during a serious drug addiction and while her relationship with Justin Stein was not going well.

“I love you and will always be by your side in this and the next. Good things will come your way now that I’m gone.

‘It’s not you, it’s me! Be strong and know that your life will be better now that the bad juju is gone… that dark people will let go. I love you Justin 4eva.”

Ms Mutten’s relationship with Stein was marred by then full-blown drug addiction to methamphetamines.

Stein said in his murder trial that his mother, antiques dealer Annemie Stein, did not like Kallista “from the beginning.”

During Stein’s trial, seventeen phone calls were also recorded between Justin and Annemie Stein following his incarceration following his arrest in January 2021 for Charlise’s murder.

In the conversations, mother and son call each other “Narelle,” an affectionate name derived from a humorous 1990s TV commercial for Holeproof socks.

Phone calls from prison revealed that Justin Stein had a good relationship with his mother Annemie, and that he managed to joke around with her despite being locked up and charged with murder.

In one specific call, Stein refers to what police say are the firearms he hid in the bush, including the .22 rifle he used to shoot Charlise.

In the telephone conversation he says to Annemie: ‘I want to ask you something. I want you to pick up some stuff in the mountains.

“You know how I borrowed some things from my friend to take care of those drones. I kind of dumped them in the bush.”

Annemie replies: ‘Oh, I think they found them, they showed me pictures… in the bush. I have a feeling they might already have them. They showed me many things. I don’t know why you even had them.

‘I’m not going to get into it. The murder weapon cannot be found because she had it with her…I don’t know where she would have dumped it.’

Justin Stein was found guilty of the murder of Charlise Mutten on Wednesday and will be sentenced in August.
