I love building PCs, but I understand why off-the-shelf gaming desktops are popular. They eliminate the guesswork of purchasing components and ensure that they are all compatible with each other, and you don’t have to go through the stressful process of installing them all. I also get into off-the-shelf PCs, largely because they can sometimes be had for a bargain, like iBuyPower’s Y40 model, which costs $999.99 Walmart now.
You can quickly estimate the value of a turnkey gaming PC by figuring out how much the GPU in it would cost on its own. On the Y40, the RTX 4070 with 12GB of video memory would cost you $500 or more – about half the cost. The AMD Ryzen 7 7700 CPU would cost you another $275, not to mention the motherboard, the 16GB of fast DDR5 (5,200MHz) RAM, the all-in-one liquid-cooled system that keeps the CPU cool, and its 700W 80+ Gold power supply. Additionally, the Y40 comes with a wired RGB keyboard and mouse; you just need to plug in a monitor to connect to it.
Even though Nvidia and AMD will likely have new GPUs in 2025, the RTX 4070 in this machine will likely be a gaming powerhouse for years to come. It will rip through any game at 1080p resolution, and probably at 1440p resolution as well. Even as the system starts to show its age with future titles, Nvidia’s DLSS AI upscaling technology, which many games support, will give it more capabilities by running games at a lower resolution and then intelligently altering the image on your screen to sharpen. Even when games run fine, DLSS is a boon to performance as it allows you to squeeze extra frames per second out of your GPU.
