Sir Ian McKellen has recalled the horrifying moment he fled a plastic surgeon’s office after hearing the gory details of a procedure he had been considering.
The legendary actor told how he decided to visit a plastic surgeon to inquire about a facelift, but was put off when he learned what the procedure entailed.
The star, best known for playing Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings series, said he was fed up with the lines around his eyes and his sagging cheeks so he booked a visit to a plastic surgeon.
However, the 84-year-old has decided to embrace his aging skin after being told a facelift would involve cutting the muscle.
Speak with The mirror he said: ‘My face looks older than it did forty years ago… so what? I wouldn’t consider surgery.

‘I did that once – I went to see if I could get rid of those cheeks. The man started telling me what it meant and said, “We cut this muscle.” I was out of there like a shot.”
Discussing the aging process, Ian joked, “I’m used to being the oldest person I know.”
The star was recently seen taking to the stage at the National Television Awards earlier this month to present actress Sarah Lancashire with a Special Recognition Award.
The star looked incredibly vibrant in an off-white suit with a black and white checked tie, but he confessed that his home is already equipped with a lift for when his knees are less mobile.
In 2016, Ian criticized the celebrities who choose to aesthetically alter their appearance: ‘What’s wrong with a few wrinkles? What are you trying to be? It’s a terrible arrogance to think, “I just need a break from this and then I’ll be back to who I was.”
‘Your experience makes you older. If experience is expressed in your face, what’s wrong with that?’
Sir Ian recently opened up about his sexuality and reflected on his experiences coming out publicly in 1988.
‘For me, coming out was an absolute revelation. I realized the oppression I had suffered before I accepted it, as slaves do.

‘When you are oppressed, when you are released you realize how stupid and cruel it was and how stupidly other people behave.
‘The shame of being gay is something many gay people will say they have experienced. It comes from other people, not yourself, who they visit and you accept.
‘Even today there are times when I have to think, “Should I watch my language or should I remain myself?”
‘There are Premier League footballers who cannot say they are gay. So it’s amazing today that people who are so confident on the field and so successful in life are afraid.”
