I was shocked when I woke up after routine surgery to find that my organ had been removed without my consent
A woman who underwent routine surgery claims she woke up with an extra organ missing.
Bella, 23, checked in for surgery earlier this year to treat her endometriosis, a painful condition that causes tissue similar to uterine lining to grow outside the uterus.
Bella was diagnosed with a moderate form of the condition and had become accustomed to severe pain and procedures to remove cysts that form from the tissue.
But when she woke up after the operation, the doctors told her they were not stopping at removing the growths.
Bella said, “You know what’s crazy? I had endometriosis surgery, and I woke up and they said, “Hey, we took your appendix.”
Although doctors assured her that the disease had not spread to her appendix, they removed it as a precaution so that appendicitis could be ruled out if she had further pelvic pain.
In a TikTok video posted last week that racked up 500,000 views, Bella said, “So you took away my entire organ that was healthy and completely normal just so someone would believe me in the future?”
Bella is far from the only patient to come out of the operating room missing an organ that wasn’t meant to be removed.

Earlier this year, 70-year-old William Bryan, 70, died after doctors removed his liver instead of his spleen during emergency surgery.
And last year, 72-year-old George Piano of Washington was scheduled to have his appendix removed, but doctors instead removed part of his colon. This caused him to develop serious infections as the contents of his intestines leaked into his abdomen.
In a follow-up clip, which has since been deleted, she says she had surgery to remove her IUD and “excision of endometriosis.”
This is usually a laparoscopic procedure, in which a small incision is made and then a tube with a camera attached to it is inserted into the abdomen, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
However, she claims the surgical paperwork also listed “laparoscopic appendectomy.”
Bella said, “So no, I didn’t sign up for this.”
She said she was warned that her endometriosis could have spread to her appendix, bladder, colon or uterus, and she agreed to undergo surgery on those organs if necessary.
However, she was told that her appendix was completely healthy.
The appendix has long been considered useless, although recent research suggests it may have invisible benefits.
In one studyResearchers said it may act as a ‘natural reserve’ for healthy bacteria due to its ability to spread to different parts of the gut.
Additional research has shown that the appendix has evolved several times, which could extend the lifespan of mammals over time because the healthy bacteria could reduce the risk of fatal infections.
An appendectomy is considered a simple procedure, although there may be risks associated with it, such as bruising, bleeding, blood clots, intestinal obstructions, and hernias.
While many TikTok said they also had an appendectomy when they underwent other surgeries, they noted that their doctors asked them first.
Several users expressed their shock at Bella’s story.
One viewer said: ‘But why wouldn’t they tell you beforehand that they were going to take it down?’
A user named Marianna said: ‘As someone without an appendix… they won’t believe you later either… I hope this helps.’
Viewer Ashlee Roberts said: “I would have agreed to this but how are you going to not even tell me first?!”
