Porto striker Samu Omorodion, who came close to joining Chelsea this summer, believes forces beyond his control have thwarted a move to Stamford Bridge.

The 20-year-old had long been expected to compete for a £34m move from Atletico Marid, with an agreement already in place before the deal fell through due to concerns over an ankle injury.

Omorodion instead moved to Portuguese giants Porto and has made a great start at the club, scoring seven goals in as many games, including a brace in a 3-3 draw against Manchester United.

The Spain Under-21 star opened up about his failed move to west London and revealed his belief that a partnership with Enzo Maresca’s side last summer was simply not in God’s plan.

“I’ve had a very difficult summer.” He told the Spanish outlet RTVE. “We had a very bad time because at the end of the day everyone knows I was about to sign, but it’s true that if it didn’t happen it was for a reason, because God didn’t want it.

‘I’m also very grateful to Porto for giving me the opportunity when things looked at their worst, and I’m very happy with where I am now. I have put the past behind me and am now concentrating on what lies ahead.’

The 1.80 meter tall striker was born to Nigerian parents and moved to Seville from Melilla at a young age. He played at youth level for Sevilla and Nervion before joining Grenada in 2021 and making his debut for the reserve team in March the following year at the age of 17.

He played for Spain at Under-19 level, first called up in April 2023, and went on to play at the 2023 U-19 European Championship, where his side lost in the semi-finals.

He is now a regular in the Under-21s and will set his sights on the senior team. With Luis De la Fuente spending youth like Pedri, Gavi and Lamine Yamal, the opportunity is there if he can prove his worth.
