I want to install an EV charging station at my home, but which one is best? Top-rated devices revealed

If you are considering switching to an electric car, installing a home charger is the most lucrative decision you can make, as it will allow you to benefit from significant cost savings.

Cheaper energy prices for households mean significantly lower charging costs for electric vehicles with a driveway and off-road parking than for vehicles without a driveway and forced to use the public grid for appliances.

According to the latest AA report on charging prices, savings from charging at home could be between £450 and £885.50 a year, depending on which public charging points EV owners can use.

But which home charging providers and devices are best? A new survey of 2,176 electric car drivers has provided the answers.

Thinking about taking the plunge and switching to an EV? If you can get a home charger installed to help reduce your running costs, this survey tells you which brand to choose

While home chargers offer significant savings on running costs, installing them in your home can require a high initial investment.

On average, buying and installing a home electric car charger costs between £1,000 and £1,500.

However, some providers offer a discount if you take out an energy subscription.

An extensive study conducted by Which car? surveyed existing electric car drivers about the devices they have installed and ranked them from best to worst based on a combination of factors including device reliability, value for money, satisfaction with installation and ease of use.

Customers were asked to rate their device and provider on each parameter on a scale of 1 to 5.

Thanks to feedback from EV drivers, Norwegian company Easee tops the list.

It proved to offer the best combination of value for money, reliability and good customer service, resulting in a five-star rating.

Customers using this provider reported that their chargers rarely malfunctioned and that when problems did arise, the company resolved them quickly and free of charge.

Andersen was voted best for its quality and attractiveness.

The appliances were rated as very attractive and were also highly customizable thanks to the choice of wood and metal finishes.

The company also distinguishes itself in the field of installation: it is the only company that supplies home charging points with its own team of installers.

At the other end of the spectrum was Hive (British Gas’s charging division). 30 percent of customers were left with unresolved issues, and other EV owners were taking up to 30 days to resolve their issues.

Claire Evans, editor of What Car Consumer, said: ‘Being a good provider of home electric vehicle charging points is about more than just providing high-tech devices.

‘It is also important to provide customers with ongoing support so that any issues are resolved quickly and at minimal cost.

‘After all, a wallbox for the home is expensive to purchase and consumers do not want to be left without help or, in the worst case, have to replace a device if a serious defect occurs.’
