‘I want to build a NEW West Ham’: David Moyes is desperate to remain Hammers boss amid calls for his sacking, while detailing he has to change the club’s ‘scaly’ culture and waiting TIME after feeling he had you break the team

  • David Moyes’ team is currently mired in the relegation zone, sitting in 18th place
  • But the Scottish coach continues to look to the future with the club
  • Moyes said in the new interview that he wants to ‘build a new West Ham’
  • The club reached the Europa League semi-finals last season, but now they are struggling

David Moyes hopes to spend more time at West Ham amid the team’s poor form, saying in a new interview that he wants the chance to “keep it going” and build a “new West Ham”.

Moyes’s side are 18th in the Premier League after losing 1-0 to Wolves on Saturday, with the defeat marking the team’s 12th defeat in 19 games this season.

But the Scotsman, who led the team to a seventh-place finish last season, clearly has a long-term vision for the club judging by his remarks to The Diary of a CEO Podcast.

‘I want to build a new West Ham, what does that mean? Many followers may not like the sound of that. West Ham have moved into a new stadium, it has not been appreciated by everyone so we must make the most of it,” he said in the video, which was uploaded on Monday.

‘You need exciting players so that little kids want to buy a jersey to not follow the top two or three teams in the country. I tried to change the team, but deep down I would like to say that I am trying to make West Ham better.

‘It always happened, when I was manager… we’d say you have a flaky West Ham, they’re not that reliable, and you don’t know which West Ham team is going to show up. I want to change that culture. There’s so much room for improvement at West Ham, I think they have great potential for improvement, and I hope I get the chance to keep it going.

There has been success and that’s how we continue and build on it. I hope culturally I think we’ve changed a lot of things, we’re not milky, we’re not flaky, there’s a different atmosphere to how people view West Ham, I like the way we’ve done it. We have some really exciting young players.

Moyes also spoke in the interview about the reshuffling of the club’s squad, which reached the Europa League semi-finals last season and has finished in the top seven in successive seasons.

Lucas Paquetá and Gianluca Scamacca were brought in during the summer transfer window to boost the team’s attack, while Thilo Kehrer came in defense for PSG as club captain Mark Noble retired.

‘I felt like I had to break it up a bit, because I had seen signs. My experience, my longevity told me, if I don’t do this now, they’re going to get me,” Moyes said.

West Ham are in a slump, but Moyes is hoping for a chance to turn it around.

“Now, with age, I don’t really give a *** now, I’m not going to get many more chances at this, so if I don’t try, if I don’t really do what I think is right and I want to want to do, then I I will regret.

“We went out and put our heads on the block, we brought these new players, now hopefully I have time to help them adjust. I think we have a better team, maybe not a better team like this time last year, but we have better players and I hope that will show in the coming months.’

West Ham lost 14 league games in the whole of last season, and just 11 the season before.

They already surpassed that number from 2020-21 in what has been a disappointing year, but Moyes called on fans to get behind the team after the loss to Wolves.

“We’ve been to Europe and finished sixth and seventh in the league, so I can understand the disappointment and frustration that they (the fans) can’t understand why it’s like this,” he said after the game.

“Normally, the ones who stick tend to get the best results, but I’m not stupid,” he continued. ‘In this industry, you have to win games. I’m not winning enough games.
