‘I truly do not get it’: Netflix cancels Fate: The Winx Saga despite chart-topping popularity

>

Netflix has shut down the popular teen drama series Fate: The Winx Saga after just two seasons.

The news comes via showrunner Brian Young, who announced the cancellation in a Instagram post (opens in new tab). “This is not fun news to share,” he wrote, “but Netflix [has] decided not to continue with season 3 of Fate: The Winx Saga.”

Fate: The Winx Saga, a live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon animated series Winx Club, debuted on Netflix in January 2021 and returned for a second season in September this year. The recent episodes totaled 49 million hours viewed in its first month of release, making Fate: The Winx Saga the number one show in 76 countries between September and October 2022.

However, it is clear that the popularity of the series was not enough to convince Netflix executives of its longevity.

“This is especially hard because I know how much you loved [season 2],” Young told fans on Instagram. “It’s a heartbreaking silver lining, but a silver lining nonetheless. I’m so proud of everyone who worked on the show, and so happy to be able to tell the stories we’ve told.”

“Our cast and crew have put a lot of work into creating this world and these characters,” added the showrunner. “I am grateful to each of them, and to all of you for watching. It’s been four fantastic years. Hopefully we will see each other again in the future.”

Frustrating for fans of Fate: The Winx Saga, Season 2 ended with a huge cliffhanger ending. “This can’t end like this”, one viewer (opens in new tab) wrote on Twitter while another (opens in new tab) lamented: “Hey Netflix, can you at least FINISH the show before canceling it? Seriously, it’s starting to get annoying.”

Same old Netflix?

The list of shows canceled by Netflix has slowed down in recent months, though several series are still on the chopping block despite the uptick in the streamer’s subscriber base. Bad Crimes, for example, an in-progress procedural comedy starring Nicole Byer and Lauren Lapkus in the lead roles, was recently canceled before seeing the light of day.

Overall, though, the future looks bright for Netflix movies and TV shows — at least brighter than it seemed earlier in 2022. to continue ballooning in 2023 and beyond.

Not only is Netflix cracking down on account-sharing in an effort to boost revenue, but the streamer is also gearing up to launch a cheaper, ad-supported subscription tier to ease the pain on subscribers’ wallets and its own profits. to light up.

It seems Netflix’s business uproar has come too late for Fate: The Winx Saga, but we hope more of Netflix’s best shows get canceled following the company’s strategy shift.
