Former Internazionale and Italy centre-back Marco Materazzi has revealed that he parted ways with Jose Mourinho after leaving the San Siro in 2010.

It came after the Nerazzurri’s historic treble under the Portuguese boss that saw them win their first European trophy since the 1960s, along with the Serie A title and the Copa Italia.

“Mourinho was special, he knew the names of all our children and our wives,” Materazzi said of the Roma boss in a recent interview with Italian football television.

“No one else had ever done that for me. It wasn’t a big surprise to me, but to my wife, when he met her and said ‘hello Daniela’, it was.’

After beating Bayern Munich 2-0 at the Bernabeu, Mourinho tried to sneak out on his own, knowing it would be his new home the following season after agreeing to manage Real Madrid.

Rafa Benitez took over at Inter the following season after leaving Liverpool, and struggled to match the surprising for the team that had succeeded under Mourinho.

Leonardo replaced Benitez and eventually led them to second place in Serie A and them to another Copa Italia.

Benitez has failed since leaving Everton in January last year and may be unwilling to join a Foxes side currently in the relegation zone.
