‘I think I’d go missing for a few months:’ Roy Keane gives critique of Man Utd’s loss to Liverpool

Roy Keane criticized Manchester United’s senior players following their 7-0 capitulation to Liverpool at Anfield, stating he was “grateful” never to have been part of a team that had been beaten so badly.

The Red Devils suffered their biggest defeat since Boxing Day 1931, where they were beaten 7-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino all scoring during the match.

After the game, Roy Keane was expert in giving his opinion on the performance and the former Manchester United midfielder didn’t hold back on the performance of Erik ten Hag’s team, taking aim at their leaders in particular.

“United have to take their medicine,” he told Sky Sports. ‘[Bruno] Fernandes’ body language today was embarrassing. You wouldn’t be happy with him in the locker room after the game.

‘I see one or two players today coming out at half time. They are laughing and joking with the 1-0 down. I don’t like that. That circus can sneak back into the club.

‘You’re here to work, it’s serious business. None of this laughing and joking. West Ham released them the other night. I wonder if [David] de Gea will have a presentation tonight, letting in seven goals.

“If you’re an international goalkeeper and you let in seven goals, that last goal was a schoolboy thing.”

Earlier in the week, Keane spoke about how the club had handed out a number of trophies to players, including David de Gea, ahead of their game against West Ham, criticizing the players’ mentality after a lackluster first half in that game.

However, the Irishman’s analysis of today’s game was much more scathing, with Keane admitting he was glad he wasn’t involved in such a bad loss.

While it’s only Man United’s second defeat this year, it’s their biggest loss since 1931.

‘Really shocking game. The veteran United players were embarrassing, they did not show any leadership.

‘Difficult day for United. Thank God I have never been part of a team that was beaten so badly. When the going got tough, they disappeared.

Liverpool was brilliant. They were still trying to get more goals at the end of the game. They are back to their prime,” he said, praising the home team for their excellent win.

“I never thought United were back to their prime, they’ve been giving teams chances in recent weeks and teams have let them off the hook.”

Mohamed Salah was in the thick of the action all night, claiming a couple of goals himself.

‘Liverpool did not release them today. They were clinical, they were ruthless. The great players let the club down today.

‘If they beat you 7-0, I think it would disappear for a few months. It really is so embarrassing. But they have to recover. They have a big European game in the week. Liverpool seemed sharper mentally. I am in shock.’

Kean also took the time to praise Salah for his powerful shot that bounced off the bottom of the crossbar, to surpass Robbie Fowler’s record.

‘This is from the United corner, what a shot on their weaker side. You can forgive players who have had a bad day, but this was something else. When you pass people like Robbie Fowler, you have to be a player.
