A shopper is praised for her simple trick that prevents impulse purchases at stores like Kmart and Target.
American home decor enthusiast Morgan Smith found herself “overwhelmed” by the colors and beautiful displays every time she went shopping, often buying much more than she intended.
To make sure she doesn’t spend the money unnecessarily, she uses the “trash can” trick – or as she likes to call it, “taking it to the trash.”
After noticing a product she likes, Morgan takes it out of the display case and takes it to the aisle with the trash cans to see what it looks like. As it turns out, decor items look much less appealing without aesthetically pleasing items around them.
“If I like it in the bin, I’ll buy it because I know it’ll look good everywhere,” she said in a statement. video.

“I was so frustrated when I pulled out my holiday storage boxes and didn’t like some of the decoration that was only a year or two old,” Morgan wrote on Instagram.
“The impulse buying had to stop. It was honestly just a waste so I started ‘taking it to the bin’. Absolutely recommended.’
In the video, Morgan visited her local Target and demonstrated the theory by taking several products to the trash.
First, she picked up a ceramic vase with a hole in the middle and wrote, “This vase looked beautiful surrounded by all that beautiful foliage, but in the aisle of the garbage cans it looked a bit like a weird donut.”
FEMAIL tested the hack and visited Kmart’s home section. The clever trick works perfectly for determining if you really like an item or if it just looks good on the shelves.
For example, the $10 Kmart Bottle Vase looked gorgeous among the other decor items, but didn’t quite pile up in the trash can aisle and instead looked like an unusual blue apple.
However, the $5 Bubble Vase remained elegant in both aisles.

Morgan’s video has since been viewed more than 1.1 million times and many have thanked her for sharing the tip.
“Each of these shocked me. I’m so persuasive,” one remarked, another said, “From now on I have to stick with the garbage.”
“And if you don’t want to lug it all the way to the trash, you probably don’t want it that bad,” a third added.
‘This is ingenious. Beautiful. Thank you Queen,” admitted another.
