I spend $17,000 a year on solo travelling and leave my boyfriend at home – I won’t let a relationship stop me from seeing the world

A young woman who has spent $17,000 on travel this year alone says she often leaves her boyfriend home alone to travel alone.

Skylie Shore, 21, has loved traveling since she was a teenager and now makes it a priority above all else.

This year she has already visited five countries and taken four solo trips, spending $7,000 on them. But she has many more trips planned.

In August, Skylie leaves her boyfriend, Stephen Pogorilich, 24, for a two-month trip through Europe, Japan and Canada, costing her another $10,000.

Although the couple still enjoys traveling together, travel-mad Skylie doesn’t let her relationship stop her from exploring the world.

Skylie, a corporate event planner from Cranston, Rhode Island, USA, said: ‘I’ve spent $7,000 on places I’ve been to already this year.

‘But in my mind I really love to travel. I work to travel.

‘I’m obsessed with travel. It takes over my life.

‘I would never stop doing that just because I’m in a relationship.

She added that her boyfriend Stephen is “super supportive” and never holds her back.

Skylie fell in love with travel after going on a “mission trip” to Costa Rica at the age of 14.

In these types of trips, groups usually participate in community service activities abroad. Often, these trips are organized by churches.

Two years later she went to China on an exchange program and since then traveling has been her priority, even if it means going alone.

Skylie visited Italy when she was 18 and has been to Switzerland and Ireland on her own this year. She loved it.

She said: ‘I really like trying new things and stepping out of my comfort zone.

‘I love learning. You learn without realizing it.

My favourite is a draw between Switzerland and Iceland.

‘I love the greenery and being outdoors in nature.’

When Skylie met Stephen, a security guard, he didn’t have a passport.

She added: ‘He’s a beginner. He likes to go a few times a year.’

This year the couple visited the Bahamas, Saint Thomas and Puerto Rico together.

When Skylie traveled to Ireland and Switzerland, Stephen stayed home with her dog, a Corgi-Labrador cross named Dobbie.

She said, “The whole journey is about what I want to do. It’s all beautiful memories. The journey is what you make of it.”

Skylie explained that her boyfriend looks forward to seeing photos from her travels.

She said, “He wants to make sure I’m safe. He checks in and FaceTimes.”

Skylie will be going on a two-month solo trip at the end of August, visiting Portugal, Spain, France, Moscow, Turkey, the Netherlands, Poland, Japan, Indonesia and Canada.

She said, “I have everything planned.”

Skylie hopes to inspire others to travel or take time for themselves.

She said, ‘Do it while you’re young, there’s never a guarantee you’ll have time for it.’

‘Start small if you need to. Get comfortable with yourself.’
