A garage owner claims the crown of ‘King of the Pumps’ because he believes he sells the cheapest fuel available anywhere in Britain.

Vijay Jaganathan advertises both petrol and diesel at 129.9p a liter at his nationwide filling station – compared to the UK average of 145p for petrol and 154p for diesel.

Vijay, who runs the Eastgate Garage service station in Narberth, Pembrokeshire, says his low prices will continue for ‘the next few weeks’ after recently making a decision that will benefit motorists visiting his service station.

Vijay says he can provide the affordable prices for both types of fuel after recently switching suppliers to Texaco – buying gasoline and diesel in bulk when wholesale prices were low.

And he says the offer of petrol at 15 pence less per liter than the current UK average – and diesel at 24.4 pence less – is already attracting motorists from far and wide, hoping to fill up cheaply.

Compared to the UK price of both fuels recorded on Sunday 14 May, drivers filling the 55-litre tank of an average family car with unleaded petrol at its Pembrokeshire petrol station save around £8.30, while diesel drivers save just over £13. to spare.

Vijay said: ‘Yesterday we had our first delivery and the queues were very long, but luckily we serve our customers very quickly.

“These prices are an opening offer, but they will certainly continue our goal of being the cheapest.

‘We are currently the cheapest in the UK – this has been confirmed to me by Texaco.’

Current average fuel prices in the UK are 145.95 pence for unleaded petrol and 154.31 pence for diesel, according to the RAC.

Both petrol and diesel are down nearly 50 pence per liter since hitting an all-time high last summer, but are still much higher than they were in 2021.

UK average prices over the weekend are well below the peak of 191.55 pence for petrol and 199.22 pence for diesel recorded last summer, but are also significantly higher than the respective prices of 126.53p and 130p .43 p as of early May 2021.

Despite the recent drop, the RAC has warned that fuel prices could rise in the near future due to an increase in oil prices.

Last week, the organization’s fuel spokesman, Simon Williams, said: “The big question is whether retailers are going to increase their pump prices, and if so, how quickly.”

He added that while average costs at the pump would not rise immediately after the spike in oil prices, they could rise if they remained high for “a few days”.
