I planned the perfect lakeside proposal for my girlfriend – it was a disaster but she still said yes

It’s often referred to as one of the important moments of your life – so when this man decided to propose to his girlfriend, he settled on a picturesque lake as his perfect location.

But while it may have provided the ideal backdrop for an engagement announcement on Instagram afterwards, there was one thing he didn’t consider: the chance of his fiancée losing her ring in the water.

Earlier this year, McKenna Hiller – a model from New York – was asked by her future brother-in-law to film the proposal on her phone.

The video begins with her sister’s boyfriend – who was smartly dressed in a red shirt and cream chinos – getting down on one knee as they stood together on a scaffolding.

After caressing her boyfriend’s face, McKenna’s sister says “of course I will” and turns to see her family’s reaction – but accidentally knocks the ring box out of her partner’s hand.

The bride-to-be bursts out laughing and says, “Oh s**t!”

Luckily for the couple, McKenna reacted quickly and didn’t think twice before jumping into the water to retrieve it.

She said, “My instinct as a little sister was to jump right in!”

But as she dives into the water, McKenna knocks over a bottle of beer, causing someone off camera to say, “This is typical for us!”

Thanks to her quick reactions, McKenna was able to save the diamond engagement ring before it floated away.

The video then ends with the couple reuniting with the ring and sharing a quick kiss.

Although they had originally only planned for the video to be shared with friends and family, McKenna then uploaded it to TikTok – where the footage left viewers in hysterics.

One wrote: ‘Why do people still propose? [jetties]?! This was always going to happen!’

McKenna jumped into action to save the ring as her sister burst out laughing and her brother-in-law looked on.

Another joked: ‘I don’t think she wanted to get married!’

In December 2023, a man went viral for all the wrong reasons when his girlfriend rejected his romantic proposal in Rome.

The video started with the pair dancing on the fashionable street Via dei Condotti before getting down on one knee.

But his partner immediately becomes tense as she repeatedly gestures and begs him to stop in front of the audience as the romantic music continues.

‘I didn’t expect it. I wasn’t ready. But is that why we came to Rome?’ she says several times, according to the Italian newspaper La Stampa.

The man then allegedly asked in the presence of bystanders: “But is it yes or no?”

After some hesitation, she answers that it’s a ‘no’, before he stands up, heartbroken.
