Robert Lindsay has announced he will be quitting Twitter as his son feels it’s ‘affecting his daily life, thoughts and imaginings’.

The actor, 72, admitted he needs to ‘detox from the stresses of social media’ but will keep his account active so he can ‘pop in now and again to read the news’.

He didn’t specify which son had advised him to quit the platform, but he shares Samuel, 22, James, 19, and John, 10, with his wife Rosemarie Ford, 60.

The BAFTA winner wrote: ‘After a long conversation with my son I’ve decided to leave Twitter alone as he feels it’s affecting my daily life, thoughts and imaginings.

‘He’s right of course and I need to detox from the stresses of social media and concentrate on what I set out to do three years ago and write.

‘Reading, writing and the theatre is my passion and I’ve allowed the many distractions of a problematic world which we all care about so much from allowing me the freedom I need to fulfil my career.

‘I’m so proud of my son who has like many young people suffered because of social media for recognising my constant distraction from what I really should be doing.

‘I’m not really leaving as I shall be popping in now and again to read the news over my morning tea and perhaps as I’ve never conquered smoking maybe

‘Twitter still holds its grip on me but I have managed to cut down my smoking!!!!
