I moved into my NYC apartment and could see the Empire State Building – here’s how the skyline dramatically changed in a year

  • An Instagram user showed how long it took for New York’s skyline to change
  • They had been living in the posh apartment complex The Eugene for four months
  • The furious resident initially thought they would have the ‘amazing view’ forever

An Instagram user has shown how quickly New York City’s skyline can change in less than a year.

The account, known as @newyork__only, was posted a video on Jan. 3 from the roof of the Eugene Building in Hudson Yards, where construction of a skyscraper can be seen obscuring the Empire State Building.

“When I moved into my apartment in New York City, I thought I would forever have this amazing view of the Empire State Building from my roof…,” the user wrote.

They then showed the building’s construction during the first four to 12 months of living in the Hudson Yards apartment complex.

It is unclear when construction began, but a Facebook video shows the view of the Empire State Building was blocked for residents of The Eugene in July 2023.

An Instagram user shared a video of construction outside the Eugene building after only living there for four months

The resident first showed the skyline and a crane in the middle of the skyscraper that was under construction.

They later showed what the view looked like after living at The Eugene for five and nine months.

The view of the Empire State Building was perfectly blocked by the skyscraper after its resident lived there for just ten months.

Two months later, construction was almost complete.

“I will miss this amazing view forever,” the user wrote alongside a clip of fireworks shooting from the Empire State Building.

‘Meh. When your building was built it had the same impact on someone else,” one Instagram user wrote.

Some people repeatedly welcomed the resident to New York due to the frequent construction of skyscrapers and even wrote that he should get over the construction, since they live in a building with a roof terrace.

‘You still have better eyesight than me. I see rats and people laughing,” someone else wrote.

Others suggested the resident see what is available in ‘the new building’ and that they can simply move if they are not satisfied.

“If you can afford to live in this apartment, you can afford to move,” one Instagram user wrote.
