I made cookies in an air fryer – and they’ll soon rival those from my favorite cookie shop

>

We love cookies, and we love airfrying (who doesn’t?), so it made perfect sense for us to bake a batch of crunchy but gooey cookies on the weekend, especially since it would limit our spending on pre-made cookies. cookies and address our need for a snack.

There is a fabulous shop nearby that bakes and sells delicious biscuits, setting the bar super high. Armed with one of the best air fryers, a fearless attitude and an appetite for all things sweet, we found a cookie recipe on Instagram from @airfryingfoodi (opens in new tab) for some guidance before you get stuck in the pantry.

As it turns out, social media and the internet are inundated with airfryer cookie recipes, all using pretty much the same basic ingredients (eggs, sugar, butter, flour, and leavening agent) and using the same method. As always, you can improvise or make adjustments if you don’t have a particular ingredient, or your local store doesn’t stock it. The recipe we followed uses chocolate chips, but we used milk and white chocolate buttons instead because our corner store was out of stock.

Best Air Fryer Deals

If you don’t already own an air fryer, these are the best you can buy for the best prices…

After a quick search online, we came across a recipe from @airfryingfoodie on Instagram. It looked super easy to follow and (almost) foolproof. The recipe even resembled the air fryer chocolate chip cookies (opens in new tab) recipe on the Air Frying Foodie website, so reassured we went for it.

We used a dessert spoon to measure out the cookie dough balls, making a total of 22 cookies. If you want half the number of cookies, or don’t have time to bake them today, you can freeze leftover dough for up to three months.

For gooey cookies, reduce the cooking time by one or two minutes. Do you prefer them crispier? Extend the cooking time by one minute.

Below are the ingredients you need for airfryer cookies according to @airfryingfoodie:

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup of softened unsalted butter
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups All Purpose Flour
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips (exchanged for white chocolate buttons)
  • ½ cup candy canes or pieces of peppermint candy, crushed (swapped for 1 cup milk chocolate buttons)

As with most baking, preparation is key. Check that you have all the ingredients on hand in the right quantities.

We used the Swan Retro 6L Manual Airfryer (opens in new tab). Depending on your air fryer, you may need to adjust the temperature a few degrees and adjust the timing for a few minutes.

Step 1: Combine the butter and sugar in a medium bowl. We used a spoon, but you can also use a hand mixer. Beat until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Step 2: Add the eggs, vanilla, salt, baking powder and a cup of flour. Mix until the dry and wet ingredients are combined.

Step 3: Add the remaining flour and mix until combined.

Step 4: Once you have made the dough, add the chocolate buttons and stir until evenly distributed.

Step 5: Use a small cookie scoop or dessert spoon to roughly shape the dough. Place the dough balls on baking paper in the airfryer drawer. Leave 1 inch (2.4 cm) between each dough ball to allow enough room to spread.

Step 6: Air fry at 300ºF/150ºC for 5-7 minutes until edges are crispy and bottoms are no longer doughy.

Step 7: Let the cookies sit in the basket for 1 or 2 minutes before moving them to a cooling rack.

Judge Airfryer chocolate chip cookies

We learned a lot from our experience baking with an air fryer when following this recipe. The first was that we could only make four or five cookies at a time; baking all the cookie dough took us almost an hour. Plus, due to the size of our airfryer basket – and not wanting to spend more than an hour baking – the size of our cookies wasn’t all that impressive.

We stretched our cookie dough and baking in the airfryer to the limit when we went a little off-piste and added cocoa powder. The dough lost its elasticity and began to fall apart. We got by (a little) by adding a little more butter, but the baking results were far from perfect. We’ll follow this next time air fryer brownie mix cookies (opens in new tab) recipe instead.

That said, it was still fun baking cookies in an air fryer. I’m sure it will take a few more tries (not a bad thing) to get the absolutely perfect cookie with a gooey center and crispy edge, adjusting the timing and temperature.
