Anthony Gordon says his biggest ambition is to end Newcastle’s 55-year trophy drought after signing a new long-term contract.
Mail Sport’s Newcastle Confidential column revealed last month that the England winger would commit his future to the club, and we understand the new deal runs until 2029.
Gordon became uneasy when Newcastle considered selling him to Liverpool in June as they tried to avoid breaching profit and sustainability rules and a points deduction.
It was described to us at the time as ‘the nuclear option’ and there was a determination within St James’ Park to find alternative solutions, and that happened with the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.
Liverpool remain interested and Arsenal are also admirers, but Gordon says he is happy on Tyneside after the club rewarded him for the rise that has taken him into the England starting XI this season. His goal now is to win a trophy.

“I just think the club is in a great place,” he said. ‘Things have only gotten better since the takeover. Me and the gaffer (Eddie Howe) match perfectly in terms of playing style. I love it here.
‘I am very happy here, I like living here, the team suits me very well and I am here to win a trophy. The short story is we have to win a trophy. It would be incredible to win a trophy here because the fans have waited so long. To be part of that team that finally does it is a huge goal of mine.
‘We (my family and I) have always felt comfortable because Geordies are so easy-going and so welcoming, very easy to talk to and always want the best for you. It’s a very easy place to come and live. I feel very connected to everyone: teammates, fans and everyone involved.’
Howe identified Gordon as his top target in January 2023, when he joined from Everton in a £45m deal. The player’s improvement since then has made him a fan favorite, and Howe said: ‘I’m pleased that Anthony has committed his future to the club. He has grown as a player and as a person during his time at Newcastle United and has continued to prove just how good he is on the biggest stage.

“He is committed to improving himself and the team, and when you add that to the quality of his performances and his incredibly high work rate, it becomes clear why he has such a special bond with our supporters. There is more to come for Anthony and I am excited about what lies ahead for him and us.”
Sporting director Paul Mitchell added: “Anthony is a top player with so much ahead of him. We are all very pleased that he is committed to the journey we are on at Newcastle United.
“Our staff has done a tremendous job nurturing his talent and developing his game, and Anthony deserves so much credit for his dedication to pushing himself to be better and achieving every day. Developing, rewarding and retaining our talented young players is a vital part of building sustainable success, and Anthony will play a major role as we strive to achieve our ambitious goals.”
