I just got engaged and I hate the ring my fiance picked – is it just me or do I bite the bullet and tell him the truth?
A woman was torn after her boyfriend proposed to her with a ring that was the opposite of what she had hoped for.
Although the proposal was “perfect” and she was excited about the prospect of a life together, she was immediately disappointed when she saw the sparkler he had chosen.
“I feel horrible about it and I’ve been crying the whole time with a ball of anxiety in my stomach because it makes me feel like a horrible person,” she confessed in a Reddit post.
When her partner asked her if she liked the ring, she panicked and lied.
“I know I shouldn’t have done that, but he looked so happy and I didn’t want to hurt him,” the American woman explained.
“Should I just accept it and learn to love the ring, or should I tell him?”
“And if so, how can I bring it up in the nicest and most respectful way possible? I’m afraid I’ll hurt his feelings… He’s the only person I want to spend my life with.”
Many supported her, saying that she couldn’t lie about the ring forever, and urged her to tell her future husband the truth.
A woman was torn after her boyfriend proposed to her with a ring that was the opposite of what she had hoped for.
“You should start with how excited you are to spend the rest of your life with him… and then tell him that you’ve been plagued with anxiety and guilt for not really liking your ring for a long time, but that it doesn’t affect how happy the engagement made you,” one person suggested.
“This is the healthy thing to do. Well done,” agreed another.
A woman said she never said she didn’t like her engagement ring and she still hides the truth from her husband.
“I kept wishing he had gotten the right ring,” she said.
Others agreed that difficult changes are “boring,” but that marriage is based on honesty.
Others said that most jewelers have a return window for engagement rings and that men generally don’t mind if their fiancé doesn’t like the style they’ve chosen.
“I really think it would be a miracle if someone else were clairvoyant enough to be able to pick out a piece of jewelry that they would enjoy wearing every day of their life,” one woman reasoned.
Some encouraged her to have the difficult conversation as soon as possible, while others wished her good luck.
“Any man you want to marry will want you to love your ring and won’t hesitate to exchange it. Just tell him and you’ll be pleasantly surprised,” said one woman.
A woman who called herself “old school” strongly disagreed with asking the man for a new ring, saying she came from a time when women didn’t pick out their own ring.
“I say accept the ring and all the thoughts you put into it,” she said.
Another did not have such a positive attitude towards the woman’s dilemma.
“The superficiality of engagements and marriages today is astonishing,” she said.
“Man, this just gives me the creeps, that a material item is blocking this amazing, life-changing moment in your life? Yuck.”
This isn’t the first time a bride-to-be has turned to Reddit for advice after receiving an engagement ring that didn’t meet her expectations.
An American woman recently expressed her disappointment after discovering that her engagement ring contained a lab-grown diamond.
Although she loved the “beautiful” design of the ring, she still felt like it was second choice because it didn’t have a natural earth diamond in it.
She received unanimous criticism online for complaining about the ethical starlet.
“I want my diamonds to be exploitative,” one woman said.
