The next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked is likely just a few weeks away and we expect to see the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Ring and more. But I bet we’ll also hear more about Samsung’s work in artificial intelligence, especially with Galaxy AI.
While I’m confident AI will help with Samsung’s fitness and wellness devices and software, I’ve been thinking about how smart software could impact the South Korean tech giant’s next generation of foldable phones.
Judging from the rumors, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will only be a minor upgrade over its predecessor, while the Galaxy Z Flip 6 should have a slightly more significant update. But for its foldable phones to take center stage over the rest of the best foldable phones, I think Samsung will have to do more on the software side. And I think AI will be necessary.
Logic would dictate that many of the Galaxy AI features found in the Samsung Galaxy S24 series will carry over to the upcoming Galaxy foldable phones. Expect Generative Edit and other tools like real-time translation to appear.
I’m hoping that tools like Generative Edit will be easier to use thanks to more screen real estate on a foldable screen – at least in the case of the Fold 6. Even on the excellent Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, I can find it a little tricky to edit photos the way I do want, meaning more room to tap and drag would likely work well with smart AI-powered editing and productivity tools.
Work smarter not harder
Speaking of productivity, I love the Galaxy Fold phones for getting things done on the go. Thanks to the larger screen real estate, the suite of built-in Google work-oriented apps, and the fairly solid virtual keyboard, I’ve written entire functions on a Galaxy Fold. But I want more.
I’d love to see Samsung integrate AI into the Galaxy Z Fold 6, making it a lot easier to get things done while you move. For me, this means automatically suggesting smart layouts while multitasking, rather than having to navigate, which in my opinion is a rather fiddly process of positioning multiple apps in windows and jumping between them.
I also want AI to start predicting what I’m trying to write more intelligently, as I still feel like Samsung’s predictive text on its keyboards is quite hit or miss.
And building on that, I’d like to see AI help organize my apps, both in the apps drawing (which is an aspect of Samsung’s OneUI that I don’t like given the way the apps are arranged and navigated) and on the home screen, smartly placing similar apps together and in places based on the extent to which I have access to them.
While I suspect we won’t get an integrated S Pen holder in the Galaxy Z Fold 6, based on the rumors so far, I hope Samsung uses AI to make the S Pen more effective on the next-gen Fold; I’m talking about Circle to Search, which can search all kinds of information within a large circle, and the ability to cleverly convert scribbles into text and art.
Additionally, I’d love to see Samsung use the Galaxy Z Fold 6, and to a lesser extent, the Galaxy Z Flip 6, to introduce brand new Galaxy AI features in addition to those we’ve already seen. .
After all, I think Samsung will have to pull something out of its AI bag to divert attention from Apple Intelligence, which I suspect will only gain momentum in the consumer world with the full launch of iOS 18 and the rumors of the iPhone 16, which will probably be released this fall. September.
