‘I don’t care what he says’: Jamie Carragher berates Todd Boehly for appointing Graham Potter and insists the Chelsea owner doesn’t understand that discerning Blues fans are used to a hire-and-fire culture that guarantees success

  • Jamie Carragher has railed against Todd Boehly for his actions as a Chelsea owner
  • Chelsea made the decision on Sunday to sack Graham Potter as manager
  • Carragher insisted that Potter should never have been appointed by the club

Jamie Carragher believes Graham Potter should never have been appointed as Chelsea boss and has criticized owner Todd Boehly for not understanding what his supporters want.

The former Liverpool defender insisted Chelsea supporters were used to a hire-and-sack culture that delivered Premier League, domestic cup and European success during the Roman Abramovich era.

Chelsea made the decision on Sunday to sack Potter as first-team manager, with Carragher insisting the Stamford Bridge team were “too ruthless” for Potter to survive with.

Speaking on Sky Sports monologue Carragher that Chelsea should never have sacked now Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel: “I look at who they were in charge, Tuchel was one of the best in European football, you don’t sack him and go to Potter , I’m not trying to be disrespectful.

“There were problems behind the scenes, I understand that, but he should have stayed with him (Tuchel).

“The reason I never think it was a good match is because Chelsea are the most ruthless side of Madrid in how they deal with managers. It’s okay for Todd Boehly to come in and say we’re going to do things differently, I don’t care what he says.

“Those supporters over the last 20 years have grown up with a culture of winning trophies and getting Champions League winning managers every two or three years.

“They tell Potter you don’t know what you’re doing, that’s why he’s gone, no matter what the owner says, that’s what they were brought up to do,” Carragher added.

“The deal was wrong right away, I’m not saying he (Potter) can’t manage a big club, but it was too ruthless at that club. given time I get that but without a big resume you have to get off the ground.

“We had Rafa Benitez at Liverpool, we won the Champions League at the end of the season, but that season had a lot of ups and downs, but as a supporter you think this guy has won two LaLigas, he knows what he’s doing.”

“Potter didn’t have that and had to get out of the trap straight away. I think it was the right decision (to sack him). The worst thing that can happen to a club is if you’re not sure about the manager, you give him until the end of the season and then a preseason, he loses a few and then you fire him and you’re after you again.

“I agree with what he said about Todd Boehly, I’ve been very critical of him but I think this is the first decision he made right,” he added.
