I ditched my best friend’s wedding because I had work and she refused to change the date: ‘I was maid of honour… I cut up my dress’

A young woman has revealed how she ditched her best friend’s wedding and the chance to be a bridesmaid for a work event.

Amy Dickinson from Queensland said she was super excited about her childhood friend’s wedding and eagerly started making plans with her.

They shopped for dresses, discussed locations and different decorations.

That was until the invitation arrived in the mail and Amy realized it clashed with a work event.

The glamorous blonde took the story to TikTok, explaining that she couldn’t change her work event and her friend refused to change the wedding date. So she cut the dress into pieces and sent it back in six pieces with the formal invitation.

Speaking to FEMAIL, Amy said that she has now blocked her friend from contacting her on any platform, throwing away a friendship that started in freshman year and lasted for over two decades.

At first glance, Amy is the villain in this story, but as it unfolds she begins to win people over.

She explained that her friend, whom she considered a bonus sister, had always been a little jealous of her and tried to push her further at every opportunity.

“We went shopping and something looked great and she grimaced and said she hated it – but then something looked terrible and she told us to buy it,” Amy said.

She added that she and her friend had always dreamed of going into business together, but none of their ideas really progressed beyond their conversations.

This is an important detail because Amy thinks her friend is jealous of what happened next.

She and her sister eventually came up with a business venture called “the Social Summit” – a conference for TikTokkers and business creators.

Amy and her sister planned the event for February 6, 2025, and she couldn’t wait to reveal the business idea to her friend.

When she did, her friend’s response was flat.

“She wasn’t happy for me and I could tell she was almost taken aback by it,” Amy said.

Her friend then said she didn’t know if she would be available on February 6.

Amy confusedly asked why.

Her friend said she had thought of the day as her wedding date.

This surprised Amy, as her friend wasn’t even engaged yet.

“As time went on, every time I brought up the company, my friend had nothing positive to say,” she said.

Fast forward a few months to September and her girlfriend called to reveal that her partner had finally proposed.

‘I’m so excited for her, she asked me to be her maid of honor and I said yes. We started shopping for dresses together, organized the guest list, chose the color scheme… and then the date came.

‘She insisted she had to get married in February. I told her, as you know, the only date I can’t do is February 6, 2025. She rolled her eyes.”

Her friend continued to find the perfect location, but called Amy to let her know it was only available on February 6.

Amy explained that she had already booked her own work event, negotiated speakers and started selling tickets.

She said she felt “terrible” because she wanted to be there for her friend on her big day but couldn’t neglect her commitments.

Then her friend called and said the venue had found another date.

“I thought, oh my God, it feels like everything is back on track with my best friend, we’re both so excited for her big day,” she said.

The invitation has arrived. February 6. So Amy called her friend, who told her the venue had made a mistake and the first Thursday of the month was the only date available.

‘I was so devastated at that moment. I just said, “It sounds so much fun, it’s such a shame I can’t be there,” Amy said.

Her friend was furious.

“She said, ‘What do you mean you’re not going to make it?'” Amy said.

Amy reminded her that the corporate event she had been working on for a year was happening on the same day.

“She said, ‘How can you do this to me, you’re my bridesmaid. You’re really putting some business above our friendship. You look like my sister. And I already paid for your dress,'” Amy recalled.

‘I told her, ‘It’s good you get the dress back’… the dress was dirty anyway.

“Then I cut that dress into six pieces and sent it to her.”

The friendship appears to be beyond repair and dozens of people have warned Amy not to try to make up.

“You didn’t do anything wrong, you should actually walk away from this friendship,” one woman said.

“You definitely need to reconsider this friendship and boundaries. She doesn’t sound like your best friend. Best friend and longest friend are different,” said another.

Others said there’s only one way to find out if it’s really time to dump the boyfriend.

“Call the location and check availability in February,” one woman said.

Some people didn’t even get that far into the story.

“I lost it because she wasn’t even engaged yet,” one woman said.

Another shared her devastating marriage story from a best friend.

“My ‘best friend’ decided to get married on my birthday and I found out on TikTok after she posted a video of the final lineup that I wasn’t one of her 12 bridesmaids,” she wrote.

Others asked if the story was made up to promote the event.

Amy told FEMAIL she’s glad people think she’s “so smart,” but the story is true.
