The newest characters for Street Fighter 6 have been revealed at Sony’s State of Play presentation.
World Warriors Zangief and Cammy will compete along with newcomer Lily Street Fighter 6‘s base roster when the game launches on June 2, 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Zangief and Cammy have kept most of their iconic moves and playing styles. Grappler Zangief is all about command throws and heavy hitting sluggers and suplexes. Meanwhile, Cammy’s rushdown style seems fully intact, with quick punches and kicks to leave little room for her opponent to counterattack.
Newcomer Lily looks a little more interesting, with a short build and some boomerang-like armaments. She’s certainly a more light-hearted character and has the potential to become a new fan favorite alongside other new challengers like Marisa and Manon.
For better or for worse
Street Fighter fans have been eagerly awaiting the reveal of these three characters in the base roster. Both Zangief and Cammy are among the most popular fighters in the franchise and have found their way into most Street Fighter entries, mainline and spin-offs.
I have many (painful) memories of losing Zangief’s brute force style of play online, especially his standout Double Lariat special which is notorious for holding newer players in their tracks. However, Street Fighter 6 features plenty of interesting new mechanics to help turn the tide midway through the round.
Street Fighter 6’s the roster is well underway, with many fighters announced ready for the game’s launch. I hope we get another beta or two before June. I’d love to try out these latest fighters and get a feel for how they play.
