I bought the $1.99 Aldi Christmas treat every one was talking about – and now I understand the hype

A Christmas treat has caused a stir among shoppers at Aldi – with some admitting to taking home more than their share after spotting them on sale.

Ppfeffernusse, soft gingerbread cookies with a light marzipan icing, are only available at Aldi during the Christmas period.

And customers of the German retailer eagerly await the drop every year.

A regular customer, who ‘only managed to score two packages’ during her visit, was impressed by the competitiveness of others.

“A lady shoveled these into her cart like there was no tomorrow,” she claimed.

The sweet cookies, popular in Germany, were probably invented in 1753 by a famous local pastry chef.

However, the inhabitants of the Netherlands dismiss this story as a misconception and believe that a Dutchman invented them.

Either way, they’re a mega hit Down Under.

‘I love this one. “I can’t stop eating when I open the package,” one woman said.

‘Tomorrow during Christmas lunch at work, I will tear open a package. I really hope no one likes them,” said another.

‘I buy quite a lot, only available at Christmas. They’re so nice.’

Another described buying the biscuits as a ‘waste of time’, after buying three bags for Christmas only to eat them all a week early.

However, one of them argued that while the imported cookies are delicious, they are not the only reason people are loading up their shopping carts.

“It’s because they cost $5 everywhere else. Pfeffernüsse is a Christmas favorite with us,” they said.

“Buy them every year, cheaper than anywhere else,” another confirmed.
