“All my life I had been someone’s wife, mother and grandmother, so I wanted to do something for myself.

“I had been on every diet under the sun, like most women my age, but I was not happy with my body at all.

“I wanted the outside to match how I felt on the inside. I was a typical menopausal woman. She had fat around her stomach, drank too much wine, ate too much, and slept badly.

“One day, I was searching social media for women over the age of 60 who had accomplished something amazing, and I came across Joan MacDonald, who was 74 at the time and looked amazing.

“I thought if she could do it at seventy, then I had no excuse at sixty.

So, in December 2020, I enrolled in a transformation program and have never looked back.

“I booked myself a professional photo shoot for nine months after I started setting a goal, and after I achieved it, I decided I wanted to enter a bodybuilding competition.”

Susan hired trainers to help her prepare for her show in October 2020.

It took her 20 weeks of preparation to get ready for the stage and she would work up to three and a half hours a day before the show.

Susan said, ‘In the bodybuilding competition, I won the over-50 division and the novice division. I couldn’t believe that she had done it.

‘It felt amazing. I led the group of women on stage, all younger than me, and as soon as I turned on the lights I started cheering the audience on.

‘It was like he was made for that stage.

“I’m on fire right now and I can’t wait to see what I can do when I’m 80.

“Women don’t have enough examples of women like me, and they don’t feel worthy of feeling that way, but I want to show that age doesn’t matter.

‘This is 65 and this is what it looks like on me. There was a time when I wouldn’t have even wanted to tell anyone my age, but now I put it absolutely everywhere because I’m so proud.

‘I may have some loose skin and wrinkles, but I’m also healthy and building muscle is the best way to age powerfully.

“I used to love good Thai food and wine, but it just didn’t work for me. I now do five weight training sessions a week and cardio four times a week, and I can’t wait to compete again this year at the age of 66.

“I’m also doing this for them because I wanted to set an example and leave a legacy.”
