A 34-year-old man has been charged after allegedly stabbing a police officer in the head with a 30cm kitchen knife in Sydney’s CBD.
Constable Elvis Poa, 35, and another officer from Kings Cross Police Area Command were conducting traffic work at the junction of Castlereagh and Park Streets, near Hyde Park, when he was allegedly stabbed by the man shortly after 1pm on Sunday.
The man approached Officer Poa from behind and allegedly stabbed him in the head three times with a 12-inch knife.
Officer Poa suffered multiple skull fractures and was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where he remains in stable condition.
Footage filmed by shocked witnesses showed several officers, including the injured police officer, chasing the alleged attacker into the park and confronting him.

The knifeman, brandishing the kitchen knife, demanded that police shoot him.
Constable Poa, along with his female colleague, chased the man through Park Street and into Hyde Park.
As they approached the man, the pair shouted several times for him to drop the weapon before someone used a Taser to subdue him.
The man was arrested at the corner of Bathurst and Elizabeth streets and taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
He was then taken to Day Street Police Station after being discharged from hospital and charged with wounding and causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent to murder.
