A man has been left stunned after his wife demanded a brand new car as a ‘push gift’ for the birth of their first child.
A push gift is a gift given to a new mother, shortly before or after giving birth, as a reward for having a baby.
Posting his dilemma on the AITAH subredditthe unnamed man said his pregnant wife was influenced by a viral TikTok video about a woman who got a new car and a house after giving birth.
“I understand that you seek appreciation from your husband for what women go through during pregnancy and childbirth, but it’s the materialistic part that scared me,” the man explained.
‘The decision to give birth to a child is the decision of both partners. In our case, my wife is not forced to be a mother or pregnant, she also wants to be a parent,” he reasoned.

Despite expressing his reservations, the man’s wife demanded that he “use his personal savings to buy her a car exclusively for her.”
“I looked at her almost in shock and started laughing,” he wrote.
‘I thought she was joking, and I pushed her if she really meant it. She was very annoyed because I thought she was joking… and she straight up said she expected a real push present.”
The man said he planned to give her a piece of jewelry costing less than $700, along with a thoughtful card.
“I said her gift is the gift of parenthood and the realized outcome of a healthy baby. And materially speaking, I’ll probably give her a Mother’s Day card, a day out, or some jewelry she wants (less than $700 total), but that’s it,” he wrote.
“I said if she really wants an extra car, it will be ‘OUR’ car, not just hers. She pushed even more and said it’s not enough for what she will experience,” he continued.
‘She kept pushing and pushing and asking me if I don’t think she’s worth enough.
“I have told her that she is worthy as my partner and mother of my child, but she needs to be realistic and realize that none of us, individually speaking, are worthy of what she is asking for.”

The man then asked his wife to “manage her expectations.”
“She won’t talk to me and cries while arguing about it.
“I heard her criticize me on the phone to her sister, but under no circumstances would I ever consider giving HER a car as a gift,” he wrote.
“I’m sorry she’s in pain right now, but I don’t feel guilty for giving her a reality check.”
The post sparked strong reactions on Reddit, with most users agreeing that the expectant mother was too demanding.
“Damn, I was thinking some roses or maybe a necklace with the baby’s birthstone,” wrote one.
