According to the Dictionaries of the Scots languagethe expression ‘hurkle durkle’ means ‘lying or lounging in bed when you should be awake’.
And while bed rot will keep you lying on your cozy mattress all day, squatting only occurs in the morning hours.
Many people on the internet have taken to social media to share clips of themselves participating in the new trend.
One user used TikTok to show herself in bed in the morning, lighting a candle and reading.
She said: ‘I thought you should know that the Scots have a word for hanging out in bed after it’s time to get up, and it’s called hurkle durkling.
“I’m squatting and I’m squatting and as soon as I squat my last squat, I’ll get up. But I’m a big fan of a hurkle durkle.’
Other TikTok users followed in her footsteps, sharing similar clips of them hanging out after their alarms went off.
“Who else likes a hurkle durkle?” said another, before admitting that they had been participating in the practice for years without ever knowing it had a Scottish name.
