Huntington Bank is closing 26 branches – including nine in both Michigan and Minnesota – is your local branch on the chopping block?

  • Huntington will close locations in Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin
  • Citizens Bank filed for the second-most closures in the second week of October
  • The OCC reported a total of five applications to open new locations that week

Huntington Bank filed with its regulator last week to close 26 physical locations in the Midwest.

Of those filings, nine were for branches in each of Michigan and Minnesota, five in Ohio, two in Illinois and one in Wisconsin, according to a weekly bulletin published Friday by the Office of the Comptroller of the currency (OCC).

In terms of the number of closure filings, Huntington was followed by Citizens Bank, which filed to close a total of six branches, two of which are in Newark, Delaware. Two of Huntington’s proposed closures were in Maplewood, Minnesota.

In a statement to DailyMail.com, Huntington confirmed the closures, noting that they will likely come into effect early next year.

“Huntington regularly reviews our distribution network and makes adjustments and improvements to ensure our mix of branches, ATMs, and online and mobile banking continues to meet the changing needs of our customers,” they wrote.

In total, the OCC, which requires most banks to register closures, reported that 38 banks under its jurisdiction filed to close branches between Oct. 8 and 14.

By comparison, it received only five announcements of new branches. TD Bank told the agency it would open five, while Bank of America and Chase said they would open two. One application was made to Texas National Bank to open a branch.

Data from S&P Global Market Intelligence shows that a total of 1,144 national and regional banks in 49 states closed between January 1 and July 31, with companies pulling out of some areas faster than others.

Recent research from DailyMail.com found that New Jersey had the highest number of bank closures of any US state between January and August of this year.

These latest closures come after an exclusive DailyMail.com poll found that 51 percent of consumers said they were very or somewhat concerned about the declining number of bank branches.

The study also found that physical services were less accessible to Black Americans. While 14 percent of black Americans said they don’t have a local chapter, only 8 percent of white Americans did.

When banks close a branch, they must notify the OCC. In a statement to DailyMail.com in August, a spokesperson said: “The OCC understands the importance of bank branches and is committed to supporting access to banking services in all communities.”

They also noted that while banks and credit unions must notify their “primary regulator” of closures, the law requiring them to do so does not allow the regulator to object to the closure.

It also noted that the OCC does not regulate all banks in the U.S. and that banks have some discretion regarding whether to close a branch after filing.

“Typically, notices appear when the transactions are effective, although branch closures typically appear when the OCC receives notice of the proposed closure,” they said.
