An L-plater accused of sparking a high-speed chase in which a police officer was allegedly dragged away by his luxury car has claimed he was 'set up' before telling the magistrate to 'hurry up'. '

Sean Matthews, 33, from Eastwood, was driving a silver Audi sedan at “excessive speed” when he allegedly failed to stop for police in Gladesville, on Sydney's lower North Shore, on Saturday evening.

Police gave chase, but ended the chase due to safety reasons.

The Audi reportedly crossed the wrong side of the road and collided with a Toyota Kluger with a mother and child inside on Gladesville Road, in Hunters Hill.

Police attempted to pull Matthews from the car, but it is alleged he sped away with an officer holding on to the side of the vehicle, causing him to be dragged 2 to 3 metres.

A silver Audi sedan crashed in the suburb of Hunters Hill, on Sydney's north shore, on Saturday evening

Matthews then allegedly reversed into two oncoming officers before the car crashed into a concrete pillar.

During his arrest, Matthews allegedly choked an officer before being subdued by an off-duty officer and a member of the public.

Two male police officers, aged 20 and 33, were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital with neck and leg injuries.

Matthews was taken to the Gladesville Police Station and was arrested charged with assaulting police in the execution of their duty causing actual bodily harm, obstructing or resisting police and intentionally choking a person out of recklessness.

He was also charged with failing to stop and driving dangerously during a police pursuit, being an unaccompanied learner driver and failing to properly display 'L' number plates.

Representing himself at Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday, Matthews claimed police made up the story because they wanted him to “go to jail” and that he “accidentally” ended up on the wrong side of the road.

Sean Matthews, 33, is facing a series of serious charges after allegedly dragging a police officer and resisting arrest

“They (the police) made up a story to put me in jail… I would have just lost my driver's license and gone home,” Matthews told the court, The Daily Telegraph reported.

“They attacked me when I got out of the car, I didn't do anything wrong, I would have just lost my driver's license.”

Matthew also claimed that the police had “been after (him) for ages.”

When asked why he should be granted bail, Matthews claimed he has mental health issues and has “a lot going on with (his) family.”

Magistrate Estelle Ann Hawdon denied the bail application, citing the seriousness of the police charges and his previous record.

“Your record doesn't help you,” she said.

Matthews allegedly tried to strangle one of the police officers who tried to arrest him and was subdued by an off-duty police officer and a member of the public

“I accept that you say you have mental health problems, but I am sorry, given the serious allegations, including two police officers who have been hospitalized as a result, I have no choice but to refuse you bail.”

Matthews replied: “Mate, show me the evidence, what am I going to jail for?” before telling Mrs Hawdon to 'f*** off'.

Matthews will appear in court again on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old junior probation officer who was taken to hospital with leg injuries has now been released.

His colleague (33) is still in hospital with abrasions and neck injuries.

'It's always worrying. We as police officers are aware of the inherent risks,” Acting Chief Traci Watts told reporters on Sunday.
