Hunter Biden’s guilty verdict will do more damage to father Joe than Trump saw in his hush money trial, Daily Mail poll finds

Hunter Biden’s dramatic conviction in his gun and drug trial will create more political fallout for his father than Donald Trump saw from his guilty verdict, according to a quick poll for DailyMail.com.

When likely voters were asked if this affected their view of Joe Biden, the results suggest a seven-point negative impact for the Democratic candidate in the election. Trump, on the other hand, saw a six-point bump in an equivalent question.

The results come with caveats. They are not an indication of voting intention, but instead provide insight into how the statements may influence voters’ opinions of the two winners.

In Biden’s case, seven percent said they would have a “more positive” view of the president, but 14 percent said it would be “more negative.”

That meant a net negative impact for Biden of seven percent.

Among key independent voters, there was a similar negative shift of seven percent for the president.

Three percent of independents said a guilty verdict meant they would have a “more positive” view of Joe Biden, and 10 percent said “more negative.”

The negative impact was slightly greater in men than in women.

On June 11, Hunter was convicted of three felonies related to lying on a government form.

He said he was not a drug user when he bought a gun on Oct. 12, 2018, in Wilmington, Delaware.

But prosecutors proved that he was in fact in the midst of a crack addiction.

Hours after Hunter was found guilty by a jury, President Biden gave a speech at an Everytown for Gun Safety event.

He stood under a banner that read “Gun Sense University,” but didn’t mention that his son had just been convicted of a gun crime.

James Johnson, who conducted the poll, said: “Our poll suggests Hunter Biden’s legal situation could blunt the impact of Donald Trump’s, with more voters telling us they would have a new negative view of Biden in the event of a guilty verdict.

“That net decline of seven points compares to a net improvement of six points when we asked the same question after Trump’s verdict.”

He added, “With another Hunter lawsuit coming later this year, we may see this continue to cloud the president’s efforts to attack Trump on his legal troubles.”

In September, Hunter faces a tax crime trial in California.

He is charged with nine counts, including three felonies and six misdemeanors, of tax evasion, failing to file and pay his taxes, and filing a fraudulent tax return.

The charges cover fiscal years 2016 through 2019 and are considered more serious than his gun crimes.

Trump was found guilty in May of 34 felonies for falsifying company records to cover up a $130,000 hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election. He will be sentenced on July 11.

It was the first time that the child of a sitting US president was found guilty of a federal crime.

Hunter now faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.

In a statement, Joe Biden said: “I am the president, but I am also a father. So many families who have had loved ones who have battled addiction understand the feeling of pride in seeing someone you love emerge on the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery.

“I will accept the outcome of this case and continue to respect the legal process as Hunter considers an appeal.”
