Police are desperate for a mother who anonymously called triple-0 after giving birth before hanging up.

An unidentified woman called police from a phone box on the corner of Shelley Street and North East Road in Tea Tree Gully – north-east Adelaide – at about 12.35am on Friday.

Police said she was in a “state of emergency” and told the operator she had just given birth.

However, she hung up before police could obtain more details.

“Police are deeply concerned for her well-being given the information she has provided in this appeal and believe she is in urgent need of medical attention,” said an SA police spokesman.

The police, with the help of the SES, searched the area around the phone booth, but were unable to find any physical evidence.

Detectives conducted extensive investigations, but were unable to identify the woman.

They ask the woman to contact triple-0 (000) again so they can confirm that she and her baby are safe.

Anyone who can identify the woman or has dashcam or CCTV footage in the vicinity of the payphone is urged to contact police on 1800 333 000.
