McDonald’s versus Hungry Jacks: Ice cream lovers fire up in the great soft serve debate

Ice cream connoisseurs have joined the battle online to debate who has the better soft serve: Maccas or Hungry Jack’s.

The question was asked by Reddit user Gorstrom on Saturday after trying Hungry Jack’s version of the classic dessert for the first time.

They explained that until recently, Macca’s soft serve cones were a “cheap and delicious” treat, until they tried the competitor’s option.

“I don’t know if it was just luck or if they are always the same, but HJ’s soft serve seemed to taste so much better,” Gorstrom wrote.

Other users in the comments section wondered which fast food restaurant had the superior cream and Hungry Jack’s supporters came out swinging.

Gorstrom explained that Hungry Jack’s cones were “a lot creamier, more flavorful, bigger and sweeter.”

They continued: ‘By comparison, the mild Maccas flavor is watery and lacking in substance.’

A majority of comments sided with Gorstrom, praising Hungry Jack’s for being an arguably better option.

“HJ doesn’t seem to have that much sugar, and they don’t seem that stingy with the quantity,” one person said.

“Hungry Jacks tickles their cows and gives them daily makeovers, hence the better quality,” another added.

The price of each restaurant’s cones came into question as the debate progressed, with commentators giving Hungry Jack’s the edge due to their lower prices.

McDonald’s charges $1.15 for their soft portions, while Hungry Jack’s offers them slightly cheaper at $1.

“$1 for a mountain of ice cream, a great price,” said one person in favor of Hungry Jack’s.

However, there were detractors who preferred Macca’s soft portions, insisting that Ronald McDonald was unchallenged in the ice cream department.

“Personally, I’ve always preferred the McDonald’s version,” said one.

“I’ve found that while HJ’s is initially delicious in taste and texture, once it starts to melt it becomes quite watered down.”

“Maccas chocolate fudge portions are the bomb,” said another of their different flavor options.

“I think the ice cream with HJ is superior, but the chocolate fudge from Macca’s is a recipe from the gods,” said someone, trying to please both parties.

In the end, many people agreed that customers were lucky if they could order soft serve at both places, considering how often their machines broke down.

“Dunno, I’ve given up on getting Macca’s soft serve ice cream, the machine is always broken,” said one.

“HJs seem to be ‘broken’ or in need of ‘cleaning’ about 30 percent of the time,” another added.
