A mother and her two-year-old son were killed and her four-month-old baby girl is fighting for life after turning onto the opposite side of a busy highway.

Katrina Sila, 34, and her son Kai Prahastono were killed instantly when their silver SUV collided with a cement truck on the Hume Motorway in Menangle Park in Sydney’s southwest at around 11.20am on Monday.

Ms Sila’s second child, baby Ivy, was rescued from the car’s crumpled wreckage and was flown to Westmead Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

It’s not exactly clear why Ms. Sila’s car crossed from the southbound lane of the highway into the northbound lane of the highway – although the accident was not far from a minor U-turn.

“I think it’s hard to believe anyone survived that wreck – such a tragic high speed incident,” said Ambulance NSW paramedic Mark Gibbs.

The engine of the SUV would have been found meters further down the road due to the force of the collision.

The truck driver was unharmed and will undergo a mandatory drug and alcohol test.

Daily Mail Australia understands that Ms Sila and her grieving husband, Ilham, work in finance.

A family photo posted online in January shows Ms. Sila and her husband smiling as they cradle their son and newborn daughter in their arms.

“We are heartbroken to announce the sad passing of Katrina Sila and son Kai… a loving daughter, mother, devoted wife, sister and friend to many,” said a family statement.

The dramatic accident caused traffic chaos and the highway was closed on Monday.
