Four people killed when a lorry reportedly crashed into a Subaru Forester were two couples in their 70s on a road trip from Melbourne, police have revealed.

The B-twin truck collided with the SUV just before 10:30am on Thursday at the intersection of Wenkes Rd in Chiltern, 22 miles southwest of Albury near the NSW border.

Victorian Assistant Road Police Commissioner Glenn Weir said the group had stopped for a coffee break before returning to the Hume Highway.

“For whatever reason, they failed to yield the intersection and got hit with a B-double, and they were all killed instantly,” he said.

He described the situation as “appalling” and said it highlighted that a lack of concentration on the road can have tragic consequences.

The male truck driver, 30, had just completed an hour long road trip when the accident occurred.

Emergency services were photographed at the scene of the accident in Chiltern on Thursday

“The poor old lorry driver who is just doing his job, driving on and then is faced with something that is absolutely beyond his control,” said Mr Weir.

“That will stay with him for the rest of his life.”

The truck driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A mandatory test later confirmed that he had no drugs or alcohol in his system.

The truck was owned by Ron Finemore Transport, based in Wodonga.

The company’s president, Mark Parry, said the company would assist with the investigation.

“Our thoughts are with the people who were in the vehicle and their extended families, as well as the first responders,” he said.

Mr Parry said conditions were clear and visibility did not appear to be a factor.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dash cam or CCTV footage, or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
