A body has been found near a highway in southwestern Sydney, police are investigating whether it is a hit-and-run victim.
They say the human remains were found Wednesday afternoon on the Hume Highway near Campbelltown.
On Monday, a truck driver reported that he had hit something large on the road.
At first he thought it was an animal so he continued on his way.
But later he called the police to report what had happened.
Officers went to the scene on Wednesday and found the remains.
“Police began a search along the Hume Highway after reports came in that a person may have been hit by a vehicle earlier in the week,” the police said in a statement.
A crime scene has been established and officers have begun an investigation to recover the remains, which will be subject to forensic examination.

“It is believed that a person – who has not been identified – was hit by a vehicle in the area earlier this week,” police said.
All northbound lanes and northbound ramps of Narellan Road were closed due to the operation.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area or allow extra travel time as traffic was ‘very busy’.
The investigation continues and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
