Hugh Jackman lost Miss Congeniality role opposite the ‘amazing’ Sandra Bullock in 2000

Hugh Jackman revealed that he once auditioned as Sandra Bullock’s FBI partner and became love interest Eric Matthews in Donald Petrie’s 2000 undercover romcom Miss Congeniality, but her Demolition Man co-star Benjamin Bratt got the part.

The Australian 54-year-old – who is just an Oscar away from EGOT status – told the story in his new Variety cover story: ‘Nobody knew X-Men. I was a nobody.’

At the time, Hugh didn’t even want to play Eric, but his agent “made him” to influence negotiations for his role in Tony Goldwyn’s 2001 rom-com Something Like You opposite Ashley Judd.

“It’s humiliating when your agent says, ‘I don’t want you to get this job, just go get it.’ And then you don’t get it,” Jackman confessed.

People’s Sexiest Man Alive 2008 said Miss Congeniality was the first time he ever tested with another actor during an audition.

“I was impressed she was there. I didn’t expect her to be there. I’m guessing eight people she tested with,” Hugh recalled.

‘[I was thinking] “Holy s***! She’s amazing! And so fast and fast. I’m not even vaguely aware of this.” I kicked as hard as I could, but I didn’t know the script well enough.’

Jackman and the 58-year-old Oscar winner have still never worked together, other than losing weight while presenting a hot air balloon trophy at the 2009 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.

Eric’s character didn’t even last in John Pasquin’s 2005 Las Vegas sequel Armed and Fabulous, since FBI Agent Gracie Hart (Sandra) got a new partner, played by Regina King.

The Miss Congeniality films managed to collect a combined $314.1 million at the box office, despite increasingly appalling reviews.

But don’t expect a three-quel like Bullock (pictured March 31) told Metro on April 6. “God no, no. No… Unless they make a prequel with a young Gracie Hart. I think Gracie Hart in her 10, 11 year life is still doing the same thing as Gracie Hart as an adult.”

The triple threat of 6ft2in currently stars in Jerry Zaks’ Broadway revival of The Music Man, which runs through January 1 at the Winter Garden Theater in Manhattan.

Hugh also plays divorced father Peter Miller in Florian Zeller’s badly rated family drama The Son – which hits theaters November 25 – which is a prequel to 2020 drama The Father starring Anthony Hopkins.
