ALISON BOSHOFF: Hugh Jackman Reveals He Has Damaged His Vocal Range Due To All The Growling He Made While Filming Wolverine
Hugh Jackman is a song-and-dance man as well as an action hero; Just watch his performances on Les Mis and The Greatest Showman if he doubts it.
But he says that playing Marvel’s Wolverine has affected his vocal range.
He told BBC Radio 4’s Front Row: “My teacher at drama school would have been horrified by some of the stuff I did in Wolverine.”
‘I’ve done some damage to my voice, playing Wolverine.
“My falsetto isn’t as strong as it used to be, and I directly attribute that to some of the growling and yelling I did.”
Oh no! Hugh Jackman is a song-and-dance man as well as an action hero, but says playing Marvel’s Wolverine has affected his vocal range.
It comes after Hugh denied long-standing rumors that he used steroids to strengthen his role as the X-Men character.
Appearing on HBO’s Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, the Australian actor described being kidnapped “old school” for his famous role, before hinting that he avoided steroids because one of its side effects is erectile dysfunction.
‘No, I love my job. And I love Wolverine,’ replied Jackman, 54, when asked by Wallace if he had ‘juiced’ for the role.
‘I have to be careful what I say here, but I had been told anecdotally what the side effects of that are. And I was like, “I don’t like it that much.” So no, I just did it the old fashioned way,’ she chuckled.
The Greatest Showman star made a few jokes about the high-protein diet he used to gain muscle for each of his nine Wolverine movies.
‘I have eaten more chickens. I’m so sorry to all the vegans and vegetarians and chickens in the world… Karma is literally not good for me. If the deity has anything to do with chickens, I’m in trouble,’ she said.
Elsewhere in the interview, he outlined the arduous workout regimen he’ll go through to play Wolverine in Ryan Reynold’s upcoming superhero movie, Deadpool 3.
Jackman, who last got the claws in 2017’s Logan, told Wallace: “I’m not doing any other work.” I will be with my family and train. That will be my job for six months.
He confessed: “My falsetto isn’t as strong as it used to be, and I directly attribute that to some of the growling and yelling I did” (in character image)
He also credited his current starring role in The Music Man on Broadway with helping him stay in shape.
“And I’m really fit right now,” Jackman said. ‘There’s one thing about eight shows a week singing and dancing on Broadway is that I’m in shape. So I’m healthy. I have a good place to start.
“I’ve learned that you can’t rush it,” he added. I have learned that it takes time.
Deadpool 3 is scheduled for a September 2024 release.
