Huge TF2 leak reveals scrapped weapons and maps
>
From never-before-seen maps to different models, the latest Team Fortress 2 leak has given fans plenty to think about.
The largest valve seen so far; the 61 GB leak contains several unreleased maps, models, PSDs (photoshop source design), and VMFs (valve map format) for Team Fortress 2. The latter is a format that stores raw map data and is used to create maps and prefabs in the production phase.
While the exact source of the leak is currently unconfirmed, Richter Overtime has shared some of the content on Twitter (opens in new tab)including what appear to be images of these unreleased cards and models.
What’s new?
Browsing through all the unreleased content, fans have found some pretty interesting concepts. It seems like we could have had a Dustbowl map that would have integrated all three stages of Dustbowl and even some of Goldrush. If sand isn’t your thing, how about a level four turret with a teleporter on top?
The possibilities really seem endless. Fans have been able to find a Bounty Mode test card and even in-dev templates of the original powerhouse card. This is all just after a day of searching and digging, so there’s bound to be more to find.
The rule of three
Although I’ve given up on any chance of a third installment in the Team Fortress series, there are still those who hold out hope. With all this unused maps and data, why wouldn’t Valve pick up the series again?
Unfortunately, despite all this content, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting a new Team Fortress anytime soon. It’s been almost 16 years since Team Fortress 2 was released, and Valve has never officially announced any plans to develop another entry in the series. This isn’t a huge surprise as the developer doesn’t trade in threes historically. Portal was shelved after two games, and Half-Life fans have been waiting for the coveted Half-Life 3 for over a decade now. So the possibility of TF3 seems extremely unlikely at this point.
All we can hope for now is that this content isn’t completely dead and buried. Even if the developer isn’t keen on making a new series entry, all these unreleased maps and modes can make for a very hefty and welcome update. But I’m not holding my breath.
