Huge swarm of police cars swoop on a rural property in country Victoria as gunshots ring out

A convoy of police cars has converged on a property in rural Victoria amid fears someone might fire shots.

About a dozen police cars have been spotted driving past a field in Dumbalk North, in the state’s southeast, in what has been described as an ‘ongoing situation’.

Early reports suggest Victorian police officers have become embroiled in a siege, with an active shooter reportedly present on the estate.

Concerned locals have taken to social media to warn others traveling through the area, which is about 160 kilometers south-east of Melbourne’s CBD in Victoria’s Gippsland region.

Police are investigating a suspected shooter

A Victoria Police spokesperson said officers were currently at a property in Dumbalk North as part of an ‘ongoing investigation’.

‘We have reports that shots have been fired. Due to the dynamic nature of the incident, we will provide more information as soon as we can,” a spokeswoman said.

“No police members were injured.”

It is believed that the small town is home to less than 100 people.

It is understood trouble at the property started at around 1.30pm on Thursday, with police quickly arriving on the scene.

“There’s a gunman on the loose, stay away,” a local resident warned.

“We were waiting for the kids and an ambulance with lights and a police car following on the way back to Gatha,” wrote another.

A local warned that Milford Road and Foster Mirboo Roads were closed due to the ongoing drama.

Farmers Road Dumbalk is also closed at Meeniyan-Mirboo North Road, with no traffic allowed through.

Others reported seeing the police helicopter flying to the scene.

“When I came back from Leongatha, there were two paramedic cars with lights all going that way,” another witness claimed.

The incident brings back memories of a shocking attack on police in Queensland, in which two police officers were shot dead in an ambush.

Officers Matthew Arnold and Rachel McCrow were killed after arriving at the Wieambilla property, west of Brisbane, with two other officers in December 2022 while attempting to serve an arrest warrant for Nathaniel Train.

Six hours later, Gareth Train, his wife Stacey and his brother Nathaniel were fatally shot by members of the police Special Emergency Response Team.

There’s more to come.
