Huge house in stunning historic town hits the market for just $125k: ‘It was kind of a hoarder situation’

A historic, 5,000-square-foot Federal-style home in Maine has been listed for sale for just $125,000. That’s about a quarter of the current median home price in the state.

The only catch? It’s a complete mess after an unwanted visitor took over the Paris Hill home years ago and turned the entire floor they lived on into a hoarder’s den.

“It was kind of a hoarder situation,” said Fred Greenwood, a real estate agent, Bangor Daily News.

Below ground lies the enormous red house, the Amos Armsby House, full of character and charm.

With its red wood exterior, original doors, grand staircase and beautiful fireplaces, this 1812 house is a real eye-catcher.

The only problem is that the house is a complete mess and still uninhabitable.

But the estate, which covers almost two hectares, is plagued by numerous problems.

Without plumbing, heating or usable wiring, the ancient building is uninhabitable.

But about three years ago it was taken over by new owners who had grand plans to save the house from ruin.

They began by removing plaster, walls and ceilings that posed a threat, and removed clutter and debris that had accumulated over the years.

“They took, I don’t know, maybe a dozen trash cans and stuff,” Greenwood added.

In the winter, the house has views of New Hampshire’s Presidential Range. The mountains of western Maine can also be seen

A couple of new owners were the most recent buyers of the house with the goal of saving it – but the job was too big and professional help was needed

However, the job turned out to be too big of a task, so the owners gave up and are trying to pass it on to the next hopeful flipper who has the money to give it the love it needs.

Located near the charming village of Paris Hill’s Historic District, the striking property has four bathrooms and nine bedrooms, and even offers views of New Hampshire’s Presidential Range in the winter and the mountains of western Maine.

It is surrounded by stone walls and shade trees. The previous owners left a camper on the property, which is included in the offer.

Although it is next to the Paris Hill, which is on the national list of historic sites, there are no restrictions.

The next buyer can do whatever he wants with the property.

Some parts of the house are still intact, including a spacious porch with original wood and brick

A grand staircase is one of the house’s biggest attractions and features beautiful original woodwork, but still needs some restoration

Original wood trim, a spacious porch and six stone fireplaces are located in the home. One fireplace even has two cooktops – both built-in.

Another option for renovations could be to tear down the building and preserve the remaining details and integrate them into a new building, Greenwood added.

After putting the property back on the market last week, Greenwood said there has been a lot of interest and he hopes the piece of history finds the perfect buyer.

But someone has to take up the challenge.

Amos Armsby, a home builder and veteran of the War of 1812, built the house that year. He was also considered a “house builder” – a person who builds wooden houses and is often called upon to repair them, according to The old home life.

Although the historic building has much potential, there is no working heat, plumbing or usable wiring

He lived in the house for only three years. In 1815 he sold the house to a cabinetmaker, Joseph Lindsey.

Since then, the house has been bought and sold again and again.

The granddaughter of a previous owner told The Old House Life that her grandmother loved the house, but she heard noises.

There are people who claim that the house, which is over 200 years old, is haunted.

Either way, the house has a lot of potential and the town of over 5,000 offers amenities such as a country club, library, community club and a huge town square.
