HSBC could leave its global headquarters in Canary Wharf.

In a memo sent to staff, the bank said it wanted to assess its best future London location before its lease expires in 2027 at 8 Canada Square, a 45-storey tower.

Defending itself against calls for a split with its top investor, HSBC has been urged by some stakeholders to move its headquarters to Asia, where it makes most of its profits.

London Headquarters: HSBC’s lease in the 45-storey tower at 8 Canada Square expires in early 2027. In a memo sent to staff, the bank said it wanted to rate its ‘best future London location’

The bank said the review would include the option to stay and refurbish the tower, but keep its global headquarters in London.

It has been housed in the building since 2002, one of the tallest buildings in Canary Wharf and an icon of the UK banking industry.

The skyscraper is home to approximately 8,000 employees, some of whom refer to it as the “Tower of Doom.”

HSBC confirmed the contents of the memo.
