Howard Stern says Bill Maher ‘ought to shut his mouth’ after HBO host criticized shock jock’s on-air praise of wife Beth Stern: ‘I think I’m no longer friends with him’

Bill Maher apparently lost Howard Stern’s friendship.

The political commentator, 67, came into the crosshairs of the king of all media, 69, after saying he was irritated by the radio icon’s continued on-air praise for his second wife, Beth Stern, 51 years old.

Stern, 69, criticized Maher on Tuesday for remarks he made about her during his Random club podcast on Monday, after Maher said he felt Stern was inconsiderate for constantly praising Beth on-air because it was an affront to the Private Parts star’s first wife, Alison Berns, with whom he shares three children.

Maher was chatting with Julian Lennon, 60, when he recalled a discussion he had with Stern in real time in October 2019saying Stern was “bluffing” him about his longtime celibacy in the segment.

“I have to say, there’s this thing that men do…Howard Stern…he says to me, ‘Bill, you’re successful, but you don’t want to settle down?'” Maher said. “And he goes on to say how much he loves his wife, Beth, which he’s been doing on air for about 10 years.”

The Latest: Howard Stern, 69, slammed Bill Maher, 67, on his SiriusXM radio show Tuesday, after Maher said the shocker’s on-air praise of his wife Beth Stern, 51 years old, was “mean” to his ex-wife Alison. Berns. The radio icon and his wife were photographed in 2017 in New York

Maher was chatting with Julian Lennon, 60, on his Club Random podcast on Monday when he brought up the King of All Media.

Maher said he found the comments questioning, because “We know Howard had this other wife before Beth”, referring to Berns, whom he married in 1978 and separated in 1999, finalizing their divorce in 2001 (They are the parents of three daughters: Emily Stern, Deborah Stern and Ashley Stern.)

Maher said of Stern: “So he’s trying to make me out to be slightly immoral because I’m not going to settle down and all I could think about was, ‘How does that spring “It’s the second wife, how does that make the first wife feel?”

“Could we just not talk about the person while the other person can still hear them?” »

Maher said it was “nasty” and “disgusting,” adding that “stupid celebrities do it all the time,” bragging about their new marriage after getting divorced.

Maher mocked Stern for mimicking this behavior, saying, “I wasn’t alive before her, everything I did was like taking a dick compared to being with this woman I’m with now – and the first girl said: “What? “‘

Maher said he didn’t “want to fight with” Stern after they “finally repaired” their relationship, but it appears he fell short of that goal after Stern responded to the remarks on his show Sirius XM Tuesday.

“I think I’m not friends with him anymore,” Stern said of Maher, calling his remarks “sexist,” “convoluted” and “crazy.”

Stern – who celebrates his 15th anniversary with Beth next month – said Maher ignored the dynamics of his personal life in his characterization of the situation.

Maher said Stern’s behavior was “mean” and “rude,” adding that “stupid celebrities do it all the time,” bragging about their new marriage after divorcing.

Stern was seen renewing his wedding vows with Beth on Ellen in 2019, with The Bachelor’s Colton Underwood presiding over the proceedings.

Maher stated that he felt Stern was inconsiderate to constantly praise Beth on-air, as it was an affront to his first wife Alison Berns; Stern and Berns were photographed in New York in 1993

“That assumes he knows something about my first marriage – that, of course, the man must leave the woman; and the woman must be devastated and grieving for her famous man,” Stern said.

Stern said Maher “should keep his mouth shut” on the subject, obviously adding “he’s very worried about my relationship.”

Stern said: “I mean, I don’t think I come on the air every day and say, I love my wife.

“But I thought it was a pretty positive message – especially to my audience – to say to men, instead of picking on our women, how about we talk about the fact that we appreciate them and love them.’

Stern said he sent an email to Maher after hearing the remarks Monday, aiming to confront him on the sensitive subject.

“He felt very comfortable shooting me,” Stern said. “So I did something I’d never done before – I wrote in an email, I said, ‘Why don’t you call me? Why don’t you tell me what you think about my life and my marriage since then. you are, you know.” But of course he never answered me.

Stern said he “just wanted to see how brave (Maher) was” and “if he was brave enough to call me and phone me – and no answer.”

Stern said he didn’t care about Maher’s opinion of him, adding, “He can think whatever he wants.”

Stern criticized Maher’s marijuana use on his podcast, implying that he did so to be recognized as irreverent.

“Like really dude?” I think you’re almost 70, we get it, you smoke weed,” he said. “I guess when you’re drunk you kind of go off on a tangent.”

In the 2019 Real Time segment, Stern told Maher, “The only big difference between us is that I’m in a committed, loving relationship with a woman.”

Maher said, “So what?” Enjoy it,” to which Stern replied, “What is it? Have you ever had a serious girlfriend? Because we don’t see you anywhere.

Maher said he enjoyed being single and implied that married people “aren’t alive,” to which Stern responded, “I’m so happily married.”

Maher earlier this week postponed the return of his HBO series Real Time amid ongoing writers and cast strikes after initially deciding to continue without writers.
