How to unlock all mercenaries in Diablo 4
Mercenaries are one of the most important added features Diablo 4 in the Vessel of hatred expansion. These allies will follow you through the world of Sanctuary as you play alone or in a group, providing you with support in a variety of ways.
In this Diablo 4 guide, we’ll show you how the Mercenary system works Vessel of hatredand what each Mercenary does.
How to unlock and use mercenaries in Diablo 4
You unlock the Mercenary system as part of the Diablo 4: Vessel of Hate campaign. During your journey towards Nahantu you will meet Raheir, who will eventually take you to the Mercenary Den. This place acts as a sort of hub for all mercenaries in the game. Here you can take on missions to unlock additional mercenaries, customize your current allies, and even trade with a special currency you get to level up your mercenaries.
Once you reach the Mercenary Den, you can also unlock and take additional Mercenaries with you. There are currently four Mercenaries Diablo 4:
Please note that if you are a solo player, you will need to acquire at least one additional Mercenary before continuing with the Vessel of hatred story, otherwise you’ll waste a lot of it Mercenary experience (report) during the campaign. Ultimately, you will need to collect all the mercenaries before you can continue with the post-campaign quest.
If you are alone, you can appoint any mercenary as a bodyguard. They travel with you all the time, and you can level them up by defeating monsters together. While Mercenaries don’t have any equipment to worry about, they do have four skill points and a small skill tree so you can customize their moves. You can change your hired bodyguard at any time.
If you’re a solo player and have already hired a main mercenary, or you’re playing in a group (which automatically suppresses your hired mercenary ally until you’re alone again), you can still hire a second mercenary as reinforcement. This must be done with a different Mercenary than the one you are currently hiring.
Reinforcements also gain Rapport and level up with you, but they only appear under certain conditions – conditions you set. You can create a trigger with your reinforcements, allowing you to summon them into battle when you use a certain ability on your bar. When the trigger happens, they jump in and use an ability you assigned them to use. This effect has a cooldown, so you want to try pairing their ability with a trigger ability of yours that shares a similar cooldown or that you use regularly.
As hired bodyguards and reinforcements, Mercenaries can drastically change the way you think about combat Diablo 4especially if you’re a solo player, so spend time experimenting with it during the campaign.
All mercenary skills and unlock requirements in Diablo 4
Raheir is the first Mercenary you encounter, and he is unmissable. You will find him during the mainly Vessel of hatred campaign and he will introduce the whole system to you. He will act as your first mercenary, and you can make him your main bodyguard or reinforcement. Raheir is built to protect you and serves as a tank. He has abilities that allow him to intervene when you’re about to die, or challenge enemies to attack him instead. It also acts as the den blacksmith and can repair or rescue your equipment.
Aldkin is located just to the right of Raheir in the den, and you rent them through the “A nameless mystery‘ mission, which you can pick up once you unlock the Mercenary Den. Aldkin is the Mercenaries’ magic user and uses what is often called a ‘kiss/curse’ playstyle, meaning their abilities will harm you in some way, but have a powerful upside. Their abilities revolve around shadow and fire magic, and they will occasionally transform into a powerful demon that can decimate enemies. They also act as a den occultist and can improve your equipment with legendary aspects.
Varyana sits just to Raheir’s left in the study, and you hire her during the ‘The killer’s retaliation‘ mission, which you can pick up once you unlock the Mercenary Den. Varyana serves as the party’s warrior, using dual axes or a two-handed mace to dish out punishment. Her main perk is Massacre, which gives you a powerful movement speed buff that allows you to chain enemy kills together.
Subo sits on the far left side of the hole, and you hire him during the ‘A feather on the scale‘ mission, which you can pick up once you unlock the Mercenary Den. Subo acts as the villain of the party, using a bow or crossbow to deal damage from afar. Subo’s main perk highlights enemies and materials in the area, and occasionally marks a target, allowing you to regain resources by killing them. His skills revolve around traps and stuns or fire and damage over time.
