The little-known service at Woolworths and Coles that customers had no idea about – and it’s completely free

- Shoppers can get freshly sliced bread from Coles and Woolworths bakeries
A customer shared a lesser-known way to save money on groceries at Coles and Woolworths supermarkets.
Anita shared images on Facebook and revealed that customers can request to have fresh loaves sliced by bakery employees.
The extra service is free and anyone can ask for the gourmet bread – such as sourdough – to be sliced.
“I realized that if the bakery in the supermarket is staffed, you can get them to cut whole loaves of bread for free,” Anita wrote.
‘I tried it at Coles and it was a plastic bust because they put my sliced sourdough in a brand new plastic bag.
“Then I tried Woolworths, they used the same bag and just put a new sticker on it.”

“I don’t know if it was company policy or just the preference of the employee who served me. I made sure to thank the man in Woolworths for using the same bag and he was grateful for my gratitude,’ Anita continued.
A spokesman for Coles said FEMAIL employees would happily cut bread for shoppers.
“To provide customers with greater convenience while shopping, we will be happy to cut Cole’s bakery loaves on site where a bread slicer is available,” the spokesperson said.
“While our first option is to return a loaf of bread to its original bag, we will replace the bag if it is damaged when opened for slicing, to maintain freshness.”
Daily Mail Australia understands that at Woolworths the vast majority of in-store bakery bread is already sliced, but customers are more than welcome to ask a bakery team member to slice bread for them, including sourdough.
Unfortunately, there are cases where this service is not possible, for example if no trained team member is available to slice (it is a requirement that team members must be trained to use the slicer) or if no slicer is available.
Some types of bread may not be suitable for the slicer. In addition, Woolworths cannot slice a supplier’s branded loaf of bread.

“Usually I keep the bag they put the sliced bread in and take it with me to use again next time,” one person wrote.
“When I buy meat from the deli in either store I ask them to just put it on the paper and that depends on the member of staff serving me,” said another.
A third added: ‘If you go to a bakery you can bring your own bag to use and do away with the single use plastic bag. That’s better.’
