EvHave you been dreaming of partying on a superyacht like Kylie Jenner et al, but don’t have the celebrity budget or high-flying circle of friends to play with?
Well, on a recent trip to Miami to celebrate a friend’s 40th birthday, I discovered a whole world of boat charters, where a luxury ship can be as little as renting a car for the day.
My friend Jared Kleinman, who recently moved to Miami from New York, decided he wanted a boat party for his big party, with a fleet of boats coming together for an afternoon of fun in the sun.
He stated in his invitation email that the goal was “to rent as many boats as necessary to create the largest fleet of ships Biscayne Bay has ever seen!”
The “Jargatta,” as he called it, involved a total of five boats that could carry about 60 people, and while Jared had a local broker to arrange four yachts, I came across boat rental company Getmyboat, where I opted for a $2.7 million luxury boat.

There would be thirteen people on our boat, according to Miami law, which is the maximum number of passengers per ship “regardless of the size of the ship or the age of the passenger.”
This meant that, split between our party, the Azimut 70 would only cost $160 per person for the day.
The 70ft boat is definitely something to book if you want to make a big impression.
It has an open top deck, a generous covered area for putting out food and drinks aft, and a large padded area for lounging towards the pointed bow.
Moving inside, there is a spacious living room and dining room upstairs, while downstairs there are two bathrooms, along with a main cabin and two twin bedrooms.
According to HetBoatthe model (ours was a 2016) originally sold for about $2.7 million, but is no longer produced and the price of used models varies.
Booking a boat with Getmyboat was as easy as booking a car.
I selected the pick-up point and times and booked a captain and crew separately (another requirement under Florida law) thanks to a recommendation through the boat owner.
All boats were docked at Miami Beach Marina and our vessel was in dock B and slip 14.

As I had agreed via the app, the boat was ready and staffed around noon and we were allowed to bring all our own food and drinks on board, including coolers, ice and glassware.
All boats took a short cruise around Miami’s Biscayne Bay before converging at a meeting point.
I had been to Miami several times but had never ventured into the world of boat parties and it is certainly quite a scene.
The waters around the party city are teeming with boats of all shapes and sizes as revelers enjoy the sun and watery surroundings.
On many boats we passed there were bikini-clad passengers twerking and as the hours passed, the party atmosphere on our boats steadily increased as well.
The crew was clearly used to this type of setup and one of the crew members, Meli, did several rounds with a bottle of tequila and shot glasses to ensure the spirits stayed high.
In a conversation with experienced sailor-captain Eduardo, he says that there is a constant demand for boats in Miami and that the rental market is big business.
As a result, he says there are a lot of scammers out there, so booking through reputable sites like Getmyboat gives the customer more peace of mind.
After enjoying the seclusion of our luxury fleet for several hours, it was time to head back to the marina.
Eduardo had to prepare a sunset charter, while Meli’s job was to clear the decks for the new passengers.
Once on land, everyone agreed that the day on the water had been a lot of fun.
And now that I realize that booking a yacht is as easy as renting a car, the idea of Jargatta, round two, has already been suggested.
