How to Get Thavnairian Onions in FFXIV

If you are trying to make some money or train your chocobo’s combat skills Final fantasy 14you might want to grab a few Thavnairian onions. However, there are only a few ways to obtain them, and one of them is growing crops and cross-pollinating to obtain seeds.

While the process may seem intimidating, it’s actually not that bad as long as you have reliable access to a garden and can consistently care for your crops.

Below we list all the ways to get a Thavnairian onion FFXIVwhether it comes from a quest or from gardening.

Where can you buy Thavnairian onions?

There isn’t really a fixed place where you can get Thavnairian Onions if you don’t grow them.

You can pay them on the market sign (they are about 170,000 gil on my server in Primal, at the time of writing this) or you can score two by doing two Heavenward side missions: “Get a stable job” And “The true nature of a hunter.”

If you already have these two and don’t want to cough up the yelp, you’ll have to resort to breeding them.

How to Grow Thavnairian Onions

To grow Thavnairian onion seedsyou need one house. It could be your Free Company house or a house that your buddy has made you part owner of, but it has to be a house and not an apartment because you can only cross plants in the Deluxe garden patch which you can only place outside houses. You can buy these garden spots from one of the home dealers in the residential departments.

Once you have your Deluxe Garden Patch, it’s time to start planting. There are a few ways to cross Thavnairian Onion Seeds, but this was the easiest way for us to do it. Here’s what you need to get started:

  • a Deluxe garden patch in the garden of a house (as mentioned earlier)
  • 4 Curiel root, Mimett Pumpkin, Pahsana fruit, Sylkis Budor Tantalum plant seeds. It’s up to you which one you choose, and they don’t all have the same seed. Just grab four of whatever is cheapest on your server. These seeds are the most expensive part of this process, but you only need to buy four until you move on to some other gardening. They are all obtained by crossing other crops, so if you want an onion quickly, it is best to just buy them instead of making them yourself. (You can totally follow this approach, although this guide won’t go into detail on how to do it.)
  • A couple Grade 3 Thanalan topsoilwhich you can buy on the market board or get in exchange for Tomestones or Poetics
  • At least 4 Old World Fig Seedswhich you can buy cheaply on Marketboard

It’s worth mentioning that after buying this stuff you can essentially make an infinite supply of Thavnairian Onion Seeds as long as you take care of your plan. The only things you need to keep buying are soil and fig seeds, but the other things are a one-time purchase. You almost immediately make the shout back from the four expensive seeds.

Once you’ve collected your seeds and fertilizer, you’ll want to start crossbreeding them to get Thavnairian Onion Seeds. To do this, follow the steps below. (We learned how to do this via FFXIV Gardening!)

  1. Plant yours Curiel Root, Mimett Gourd, Pahsana Fruit, Sylkis Bud or Tantalplant Seeds in the odd numbered plots with the Grade 3 Thanalan Top Soil. We’ve marked it in the diagram above with an image of a curiel root since that’s what we used.
  2. Plant the Old World fig seeds in the even numbered plotsalso with the topsoil.
  3. Take care of your plants five days until they are ready to grow. All these crops need to be cared for at least once every 48 hours or they will wilt.
  4. Do not harvest the odd numbered plot plants (in my case the Curiel Roots). Leave them there.
  5. When they’re done, only harvest the figs from the even numbered plots. You should get some Royal Kukuru Seeds of this harvest, unless you are very unlucky.
  6. Plant the Royal Kukuru Seeds on the even numbered plots (where the figs used to be) with the topsoil. If you didn’t get enough Royal Kukuru Seeds, fill the remaining spots with Old World Fig Seeds (again with topsoil).
  7. Take care of your plants six more days. Royal Kukuru Seeds must be cared for every 36 hours or they will wilt.
  8. Harvest the Royal Kukuru to get Thavnairian Onion Seeds and the Old World figs for more Royal Kukuru Seeds. There is a 50% chance that you will get apricot seeds instead.
  9. Keep repeating steps 5 through 8 until you have enough Thavnairian Onion Seeds to suit your needs.

After this process, you can plant the Thavnairian Onion Seeds in another garden plot to get your Thavnairian Onions. Once you have the seeds, you can plant them in a flower pot indoors (if, like me, you have a meager house that can only fit one outdoor garden plot). You’ll have to water the onion crops for 10 days before they deliver an onion.

Keep in mind that it is entirely possible that you will have some really bad luck with your crops. It took us three weeks of planting Royal Kukuru before we got Thavnairian Onion seeds. Of the twelve we planted, we only got two onion seeds, but a whopping seven apricot seeds. RNG is just like that sometimes.
