While going on an adventure The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomyou may need a certain elusive creature: the sunset firefly. These lightning bugs play an important role in a series of quests related to the Great Fairy Fountains viz Pypers “The Flute Player’s Plan” she quest.
Sunset fireflies can be found all over Hyrule, but only at night, only in certain areas, and during temperate conditions (they don’t spawn in cold areas or when it rains). Finding them can be tricky, and catching them can be even trickier. But there are good breeding sites for sunset fireflies and the Merchant Baker will even sell you some.
Here’s where to find fireflies at sunset in Hyrule.
Locations of fireflies at sunset
Sunset fireflies can only be found at night, mainly in areas with wetlands, lakes, ponds and trees. In the early game, you can find some fireflies at sunset near ponds in East Castle Town. Elsewhere, you’ll find clusters of fireflies at sunset on the Tears of the Kingdom card on:
- Faron Woods and Pagos Woods, in the Faron region
- Rutile Lake, southwest of Mount Satori
- Hopper Pond, west of the Forest of Spirits
- Keya Pond, north of the Dunsel Plateau
Be sure to rest by a campfire until evening when you go on a firefly hunt at sunset!
How to Catch Fireflies at Sunset

Fireflies at sunset will fly away if you approach them too quickly, so walk slowly and steadily towards them if you see one. Bend by pressing the L stick to sneak up on them. Groups of fireflies at sunset will belie their true numbers; you can see what looks like a dozen or more fireflies in a location, but only catch two or three of them.
Where to buy sunset fireflies
Beedle the merchant will sell you fireflies at sunset. You can find him in Highland Stable – conveniently near Pyper’s side quest and the Faron region, where sunset fireflies abound – but he only sells three at a time. They cost 10 rupees each. Rest in an inn if you want to buy more fireflies from Beedle, who restocks his goods every 24 hours in the game.
